Upgrade Windows Vista Home Premium to Ultimate with a purchased key?

Ok so I was one of the few who in January 2007 bit the bullet and upgraded my Windows XP (Windows Vista Capable Laptop) to Windows Vista Ultimate. I purchased the upgrade through Windows Marketplace and installed the new OS. Then of course the problem started and I downgraded back to Windows XP.

Recently my old laptop was replaced with a new one (thanks HP!) and this new one came with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I am not trying to advertise Vista or anything, but it finally is working smoothly and everything. I haven't had any serious problems with it (knock on wood).

So anyway, I just remembered last week I still have this upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate (pre-sp1). I am wondering how can I use this to upgrade my OS to Ultimate. I have the key and the software. But when I tried to upgrade it said my current OS is like more advance or something so it can't upgrade without doing a clean installation. I don't want that!

So how can I use this key that I still have to my advantage? Its a Genuine Key and I just want to upgrade it Windows Ultimate. I tried searching doing the Windows Anytime Upgrade, but I didn't see anything that applied to me.

Help. Upgrade Windows Vista Home Premium to Ultimate with a purchased key?

Dell Latitude D830 web cam not recognized?

I just got a Dell Latitude D830 through work and it has a 2.0 MP web cam integrated into the bottom of the screen. The machine looks like it was originally built for vista, but my company replaced Vista with Windows XP ( for obvious reasons ).

So now I have this great new laptop, but the web cam won't get recognized when I run MSN Messenger. Does anyone know how I can get the system to recognize the web cam? Any place I can get the specific driver?Dell Latitude D830 web cam not recognized?
contact dell support and see if they can supply you with a downloadable driver for the webcam that is compatible for XPDell Latitude D830 web cam not recognized?
The Dell Latitude D830 does not come with a web camera. What you beleive to be a web camera is actually an ';ambient light detector.'; Do not fret, I was fooled as well...

I've been searching everywhere for info about this ';webcam'; too, also for the Latitude D830. Thank you, Francisco, for ending my chaotic search and explaining why it has been so fruitless. An ambient light detector, eh? Why don't they say that somewhere useful??

Thanks Francisco. I found this out from Dell tech support as I too thought it was a webcam.

Need help with vista and windows??

i got a new computer for my daughter...

but its in windows vista...

i have no idea how to use windows vista nor do i have the time to learn...

so is there anyway to get rid of windows vista and replace it with windows xp?

please give detailed step by step instructions!?!?!?Need help with vista and windows??
Well vista isn't that bad dude. Its same as XP but better.. Theres nothing different except for the Sidebar. I wouldn't recommend you replace it, because of all the trouble..Only way to convert Vista into XP is to download a windows XP version which may contain a virus and ruin your computerNeed help with vista and windows??
vista isnt really that different, you say its for your daughter, how old? vista has great parental control features and such. its cheaper to just keep it. the way to replace it is to go out and buy a windows xp installation disc. pop it in the cd or dvd drive restart the computer and the cd then loads...however you will lose everything currently on the computer..

personally i prefer vista...but then agian i am a tech nerd.

  • What would be the best way to install the Windows 7 beta for me (triple-boot)?

I guess the beta is being released tomorrow, and I want to try it out. Currently I'm triple-booting Vista, XP and Linux. I'd be willing to replace my Linux partition with Windows 7 for the time being as I rarely use it.

    Here is my HDD configuration:

Disk 0: Windows Vista Ultimate x64 (500 GB)

    Disk 1:

Partition 1: Windows XP (200 GB)

    Partition 2: Linux (50 GB)

Currently my computer loads GRUB first, which defaults to Windows, then it switches over to the Windows Vista boot menu with XP and Vista, defaulting to Vista.

I'm trying to think of how would be the easiest way to do this. Of course I'd have to first disable GRUB somehow. Can I do this with EasyBCD? Then, reformat the Linux partition.

Then, would it be best to unplug my Vista drive so I don't overwrite the Vista Boot Menu? I think I did that when installing XP so I wouldn't overwrite the Vista Boot Menu.

Is the Windows 7 boot menu the same as the Vista boot menu? If so, it would make things a whole lot easier.

Sorry if this is all a bit confusing. Thanks for any help you can give. What would be the best way to install the Windows 7 beta for me (triple-boot)?
Windows 7 is my only OS right now and i have yet to complain about it. I switched a week ago and i just rolled the dice, hoping that it would be satisfactory. I can tell you that the Win7 boot menu, as most of its features, is exactly the same as that of WinVista. What would be the best way to install the Windows 7 beta for me (triple-boot)?

    Try this:

    http://www.digitgeek.com/how-to-slipstre
    1. In BIOS, make sure the boot order lists the CD Drive as first, followed by the hard drive.

    2. Insert the XP install disk.

    3. When prompted, boot from disk.

    4. You should be able to format your drive and install XP.
hi hi I'm winner .I want to be your friend.you must for your yahoonick.
well i would bet that you will not beable to put XP onto a machine that came with Vista, but in order to make the sata portion work you will need to change the settings in the bios to make xp recognize it by default it does not it needs the drivers and the drive needs to be configured...

the other option would be to load vista back on it and run the notebook the way it was ment to be run
There are too many variables here to properly diagnose your problem. I would first recommend that you verify that you are doing it the right way. Here are Sony instructions on ';How to downgrade to the Windows庐 XP operating system using the SATA HDD drivers';:

Repair XP boot registry that is dual boot with Vista?

Problem: I have a machine that C drive is Vista and D drive is XP. Due to recent issues with the XP install, the boot registry has become corrupted and needs to be replaced/fixed. When I boot up with the XP CD to try repair the boot, I receive a pretty blue screen of death due to the fact that the C drive is Vista. How would I go about repairing the bootstrap to the XP drive?Repair XP boot registry that is dual boot with Vista?
Try easy BCD, its the best and the easiest in solving XP-Vista booting troublesRepair XP boot registry that is dual boot with Vista?
There are many solutions on the web - BartPE might be the easiest. Or UBCD. Or even a Linux Live CD or GPartEd CD. If you can get any Windows CD running, run fixmbr. If not, see if GPartEd complains about sda1 (your C drive) and offers to fix it. I used that once to get a boot sector back.

(Or a DOS floppy or CD with a raw disk editor, if you want to spend the time to learn what a boot sector should look like. It's pretty easy once you know what you're looking at. Finding a DOS disk editor is the hard part.)

Take an image of the XP Drive with an imaging program like Acronis True image and save that image to the Vista Drive. Then install the new drive and place the XP image on it and select it as the primary drive. I think you can get a trial version of the program..

    Windows XP Home software questions?

I have a friend who wants Vista completely gone and replaced with XP Home on his laptop. He does have XP Home full version (6 Discs) on the CD it specifically says HP Windows XP Home Edition that came with his destop. He has 2 licenses per end user agreement. Both desktop and laptop are HP's. Is it ok to install on his laptop? Someone told me it may not work because of serial number recogniction, is this true? Can I install it on his laptop? I dont want him to have to buy a new full version of XP Home if he doesnt have to. AND even looking for software its pricey, would an OEM version be ok for him to buy if he ever has to reformat in the future? How many computers can you install and OEM version on?

Please answer all questions if you can.Windows XP Home software questions?
To install Windows XP, you MUST have a brand new serial number. That means, if his or yours already used, it cannot be used again. (I tried it and it failed.) However, if you happen to find a pirated serial, it will tell you your Windows is not genuine therefore it will not let you update from Microsoft.

Each serial only works once, unfortunately. But that's how Microsoft gets their money.Windows XP Home software questions?
microsoft is a sucker.... just call them up over the phone and they will give you the activation #, i have done this many times for activating vista. but make sure on the installation that you choose to activate over the phone.
How many questions was that!!!!! (it started to confuse me)

So your ';friend'; wants to install XP. He has a copy of XP (on 6 discs?) and has a licence to it?

I'm guessing the Vista Computer is not an HP computer.

He shouldn't have a problem installed it on the new computer UNLESS the software checks to make sure. Some versions of Windows XP come from the Computer company, and are only allowed to be installed on the those typse of computers (An HP Copy of Windows be installed on HP computer).

but you probably should just try it anyways. The point with license is that this is only installed on One Machine at a time. so the license that he is going to use, isn't being used anywhere else.

he could buy OEM, this is for System builders, but you can only install this on ONE machine!
    These could assist.

As stated in the other answers, you can install Windows XP as long as there is driver support for doing so. The details involved in installing an OS are fairly numerous and would be outside the scope of a forum such as this, but it is pretty statghtforward. Just launch the installation from a CD and follow the prompts.

Note, however, that purchasing a computer with an OEM version of Vista does not typically provide downgrade rights to XP. In order to maintain compliance with the license agreement, you will probably need to purchase a full retail copy of XP.I bought a new computer and it has vista ...?
Yes, you can load XP on your system instead of Vista. In effect, you wipe your drive and start over with the XP install ...but why?

Most of the problems associated with Vista relate to it not having drivers for the various hardware components out there. This mostly affects people who are trying to upgrade from XP to Vista.

But in your case, you bought it from a reputable manufacturer who has already loaded the correct drivers for you, and made sure everything is compatible.

So, if you aren't having problems with Vista, stick with it. Don't be too concerned about the stuff you've only read or heard about.
    Check out this link...

Well, first you'll need a copy of Windows XP. Then you would just put the disk in the drive and tell the computer to boot from that CD/DVD drive and Windows will guide through the rest. To change your boot order, you'll have to access the bios. To access the bios, you'll have to press a certain button right before windows starts to load up. For my computer, I have to press the ';delete'; key right when the computer starts up.

This site might help you out on accessing the particular bios you have on your PC.

Well.. i too had this same problem when i bought laptop..

so later i decided to remove it completely and then i installed XP in it.

To install XP. I hope u have the XP cd then restart the system. then press f2 key to go in bios settings.

then u need to change the boot disk to cd rom.

then save the settings and restart the system

then it asks to press any key to boot into Cd

after doing that it goes in blue screen and then asks you few options like press enter then f8 to continue..

then it asks to select in which drive u need to install..

Here dont forget to format the disk u need to install

Format it using fat32. Format it completely

Allow it to finish it till end and in between it asks for things which u can do it easily..

Hope u can do it easily..
Word of Advice. If choosing to go to Windows XP, make sure you can download the drivers for XP for your computer model and type first. I made the mistake of not getting the drivers first. It will save you a lot of head aches and fighting the install to XP.

And Yes, I dumped Windows Vista on two Brand new computers, for Windows XP.

just follow the steps. just on step five delete your old partition first then continue with the installation.

note: make sure that you have your drivers for your hardware, that is for win xp. you have to download that at hp.

there is an online chat with hp.com that will help you find the downloads for the drivers in winXP for your machine.

    hope this helps. thanks.

The question most often asked is ';How do I install a dual-boot with Windows XP on my new Windows Vista computer?'; The answer is that it's not that difficult, it's just very time consuming, and you need to own a copy of Windows XP.

Note that you should not attempt this if you aren't ready to troubleshoot any problems that might occur.

The first issue we encounter is that computers with pre-installed operating systems take up the entire drive. Luckily Microsoft included the Shrink volume feature in Vista, so we can easily shrink the Vista partition down to make room for XP.

Open the Computer Management panel, which you can find under Administrative tools or by right-clicking the Computer item in the start menu and choosing Manage. Find the Disk Management item in the list and select that.

Now we'll shrink our volume down by right-clicking on the main hard drive and choosing Shrink Volume.

Now you can choose the size that you want to shrink, which really means you are choosing the size that you want your XP partition to be. Whatever you do, don't just use the default. I chose roughly 10gb by entering 10000 into the amount.

The next step might be confusing, because we need to change the cd-rom drive that's invariably taking up D: at the moment, because we want to use D: for the Windows XP partition, but it's already taken by the cd-rom drive. If you skip this step than XP will install onto the E: drive, which isn't the end of the world, but it's not quite as tidy.

Right-click on the cd-rom drive in the list and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.

Now we'll change the CD drive to use E: by selecting that in the drop-down.

Now we can create a new partition for XP to live on and make sure that the drive letter is set the way we want. If you do not create a partition now the XP install will do so automatically, but it's easier and cleaner to do it this way. Right-click on the Unallocated free space area and then select New Simple Volume from the menu.

Follow through the wizard and select whatever options you'd like, making sure to use D: as the drive letter.

Now you will need to close out of disk management and reboot your computer. This is because we can't do the next step until we reboot. (you can try, but it won't work)

So we've come back from rebooting鈥?open up Computer from the start menu and then right-click on the D: drive and select properties. Give your partition a meaningful name like ';XP';. It would be wise to name the C: drive to ';Vista'; at this point as well.

Now you'll want to pop your XP cd into the drive and boot off it. You may have to configure your BIOS to enable booting off the CD drive, or if your computer says something like ';Hit Esc for boot menu'; you might want to use that.

Once you come to the screen where you can choose the partition to install on, then choose either the unpartitioned space or the new partition you created. Whatever you do, don't try and install onto your Vista partition! See how much cleaner it is now that we've labeled each partition distinctly?

We'll assume XP is completely installed at this point, and you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista, so we'll need to use the VistaBootPro utility to restore the Vista boot loader.

    Download and install VistaBootPro from

    http://www.vistabootpro.org

During the install you'll be forced to install the .NET 2.0 framework. Open up VistaBootPRO and then click on the System Bootloader tab. Check the ';Windows Vista Bootloader'; and then ';All Drives'; radio buttons, and then click on the Install Bootloader button.

At this point, the Windows Vista bootloader is installed and you'll only be able to boot into Vista, but we'll fix that. Instead of manually doing the work, we'll just click the Diagnostics menu item and then choose Run Diagnostics from the menu

    This will scan your computer and then automatically fill in the XP version.. click on the ';Manage OS Entries'; tab and then click in the textbox for Rename OS Entry, and name it something useful like ';Windows XP'; or ';The Windows That Works';

Click the Apply Updates button and then reboot your computer鈥?you should see your shiny new boot manager with both operating systems in the list!

This is a critical piece of information: Windows XP will be installed on the D: drive, even in Windows XP鈥?so you'll need to keep that in mind when tweaking your system.

You can share information between the drives, but I wouldn't recommend messing with the other operating system's partition too much鈥?it might get angry and bite you. Or screw up your files. What I do recommend is that you store most of your files on a third drive shared between the operating systems鈥?you could call that partition ';Data';.
i love vista, all problems are from people upgrading not from new computers vista is good.
It's better if you stick with vista.

How can I get a free DVD reading and copying software for a Toshiba upgrated to Vista?

I have recently bought a brand new Sattelite Pro 120 laptop from Toshiba. The deal was that I was officially buying this with Vista, but would receive the computer with an XP pre-installed, and then would have to apply for an upgrade Vista CD from a Toshiba authorised company. The computer had also a number of the usual extra applications like Bluetooth driver, DVD copier and reader etc. When I received the Vista (it took 2 months!!!) and upgraded, most of those programmes stopped working. I was able to download some of the upgrades from Toshiba's page, but there was nothing that could replace the Windows XP application for coping and reading DVDs. I called them and they deny any responsibility for providing me with the suitable upgrade. What should I do? Is there any chance of achieving anything with them or should I switch to a free and new application which you could recommend? You should have brought a computer with Vista

pre-installed that way all the programs would have worked and you would not now be asking for free copying software. and if you brought a computer with XP installed on it then that would mean you brought old stock for all computers now are sold with Vista as the new operating system.

If you can't figure out this extremely simple process, you will have absolutely no luck in getting XP working on your computer properly.

The reason it does not work is that XP is an outdated piece of crap that was created before SATA drives were. The SATA controller has to be set to ';legacy'; (which means ';old';) mode to emulate an IDE drive. Afterward, XP will be able to see the drive. You can't set it back to normal SATA until you manage to find the chipset drivers for your computer (along with the wireless, graphic, modem, etc...).How do i get vsta off my laptop so i can install xp?
Because you cannot install XP over Vista. It's a bit more tricky with more steps.

First of which you need to go to the Acer web site and make sure your computer model will support XP drivers, as not all Vista comptuers can support it.

Once you do that and if it can have XP. You will have to format the hard drive of the computer in order to remove Vista, after that you can install XP.

But bewarned if you install XP, you may lose the warranity on your computer.

Vista then wait for 7 - its not even a month away
you cant install xp without deleting your files.

you should wait till windows 7.

then you can upgrade which means it will keep all your files.

just wait until windows 7 its much better than xp and vista
Vista is notoriously slow, it uses so much processing power to spy on you. Either de-install it and re-install XP or update vista to Windows 7 on the website. XP has been taken off the shelves in the shops and is now only available e.g. through ebay. make sure you get one with a licence though.
    Stay with Vista
I ditched MS and started using Kubuntu two years ago and haven't looked back since. I've had no compatibility issues as similar to you, I use my PC mostly for office applications and browsing the net. I am also amazed at how much I've learned about operating systems, the command line interface and virtualisation in these two years. Computing has become fun again.

The only drawback I can think of is the lack of 3D games. I do miss Total War.
    yes its possible
You could wait untill you can upgrade to windows 7 (vista service pack 3!)

    Or Upgrade to xp.

Whilst all the reports for windows 7 are good it still contains many security holes, and is still largely untested in actual use.

I will upgrade from xp to win 7 in about 4 years time, to give them a chance to sort out any problems with it.

So personaly I would get xp on your machine.

XP pro can be purchased of Amazon with service pack three for around 100, but no doubt you can get it cheaper than that.
    Hi

I took vista off of my computer(really slow program!)I had to nuke my hardrive,re-format,then took my x/p cd and re-installed.As long as you have the x/p cd,no prob.

Is possible to change/replace/upgrade a computer motherboard currently running Vista w/o fresh OS install?

I recently upgraded my Windows XP to Windows Vista. After update, I realized Vista is too slow on my old PC. So I built a new PC. I cloned HD with Vista installed and moved it to new PC. But I can't boot into Vista due to different motherboard on my new PC. Since Vista is new OS, I can't find a way to fix this common installation problem. If it is XP, I know how to re-install OS without upseting my existing files and settings. Anyone knows how to do that under Window Vista?

I have tried Vista's Window Repair and it doesn't work. I've tried to re-install Vista, but it tried to rename my existing window directory to windows.old which is not what I want.Is possible to change/replace/upgrade a computer motherboard currently running Vista w/o fresh OS install?
Not likely. Vista takes a snapshot of everything on your system and creates an id for it. If you change enough hardware, Vista will revert to a non-activated state.

Missing most of my hard drive after making a partition?

I've just replaced Vista with XP Pro on my laptop. It gave me the option of making a partition so I selected a C: drive of 60Gb for the OS and related software.

Everything seemed to instal nicely and I expected to find a second partition with the remaining 260Gb on it, but its not there!! How do I find/create a partition with the missing hard drive space?

Thanks heaps for help that doesn't resort to purchasing softwareMissing most of my hard drive after making a partition?
Its not partitioned yet. You have to go to control panel. Then Administrative tools. Then computer management. In computer management you will see System tools, Storage, and Services and Applications.

Click on Storage then Disk management.

It will load the Hard drive info. Right click on Not allocated space (Or not formatted space) then click format and select NTFS and quick format and assign it a drive letter then click ok. You can give it a volume name but not needed. Then when its done formatting it will show up in My computer.Missing most of my hard drive after making a partition?
Windows can only see a partition if you create it, sounds like you have created the 60GB for the windows installation but left the 260GB un-partitioned which means windows won't be able to see it.

Put your XP disk back in and act as if you going to do a normal new instal.. but when you get to the part where it asks you where you want to install windows you should see that you have a 60GB partition and 260GB (approx) of unpartitioned space select this an create a partition.

Don't finish the installation, just exit it and re-boot as normal, the new partition should show up in windows as unformatted space. Do a format on it and its ready for use.

  • How to replace the main computer in a network without losing the network settings...?

Hi I really need help with this one

3 Computers in a network 2 pc s are running win2000 and the 3rd win98. The main PC we will call W2000 is the main PC and the other pc's connect to this one for internet access and folders etc... Problem is W2000 is slowly dying and keeps shutting down. How do I replace the entire PC and start using the new PC with windows XP or Vista. Can i just plug in the new PC and the other PC's will connect via the router? Or are their settings to write down from the old W2000 pc to input into the replacment pc ?

thanksHow to replace the main computer in a network without losing the network settings...?
You can save the configuration into a thumb USB drive (Win XP has a wizard for exactly that). Setup the new PC and then use the thumb drive as a source to load the configuration from. That also is a wizard. How to replace the main computer in a network without losing the network settings...?
To switch the server from win2k to an XP machine, there are definitely going to be settings that need to be set up.

Keeping it offline, work on the new PC until you have all the network settings you need set up. Then add it to your router WITHOUT removing the current browser and get it to working that way. Once you have everything going, you can pull hte old PC and let the new one take over.

That's a very simplified description. You might want to ask this question on a dedicated newsgroup such as

Microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web located in msnews.microsoft.net. You need more assistance than can be given here.

If any of hte above doesn't make sense to you, then I respectfully submit that you need to find someone to assist you or commit to a few days of downtime while you get things set up again. Things like this never go smoothly, especially for the inexperienced.

    HTH

    Tom`
It depends on the network setup. If you are using DHCP you should be able to install a new pc and copy old pc's data to it. If not using DHCP, you are using static IP. You will need to write down the IP Subnet Mask Gateway DNS settings so you won't have network conflict while you set up the new pc. As long as you have DNS and your gateway you should not lose internet access unless old pc was internet connection sharing gateway.
Hi, once you get the new pc, name it the same as the old one, and install the software for the router, etc. You should be ok. If not, it is easy enough to create your new network by running the Network Set up WIzard in XP

    See this: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docum
This is a difficult question to answer in such a short space. This is why they pay me the big money (yeah, right). You should get Windows XP Professional. Not MEDIA addition, not Vista.

Set up the new computer and get it running. Use the USER MIGRATION TOOLS that come on the Windows XP setup disc or within the Windows XP computer. At the HELP prompt of XP, type MIGRATION. There will be a FILES AND SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD overview.

Now some questions: Is the Windows 2000 computer that is dying a file server, print server, DHCP server, and all in one? If so, you will need to disable the Internet Sharing section as this computer is likely the one handing out the addresses to all the other computers. From a COMMAND prompt(Dos prompt, or C:\) on the other 2000 computer, type

    IPCONFIG /all %26lt;ENTER%26gt;

Locate the IP address. If it starts off with something like 192.168.xxx.xxx it is possible that the dying computer is acting as a DHCP server.

I'd need to know many more things than what you have provided to be affective. Migrating from one server to another is a lot of work.

32bit to 64bit XP or VISTA?

Q - I have a Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU which is running 32bit vista, I want to know what I have to do to either upgrade to 64x vista or 64x XP, and also which of the two would be better. I've heard that I might also have to replace the motherboard if I wanted to do this so...is this just a rumor? or how would I know what I need to do, in detail, if I want to upgrade from 32x to 64x??

I also hear people complaining about 64x vista actually being slower somehow. Whats up with that?? I appreciate the help32bit to 64bit XP or VISTA?
Ok think of 32 bit and 64bit as highways. 64bit is a 6 lane highway and 32bit is a 3 lane. Same traffic runs on it. Which one will be faster? The 6 lane.

Point is 62bit allows your operating system to process data faster.

I would pick windows XP 64bit. Mainly...I hate vista. I have not heard 64bit vista is slower.

The rumor you are hearing is not a rumor. The processor has to support a 64bit operating system.

Your Processor will support 64bit Operating systems so you are good to go.

NOTE: when you start downloading programs for windows xp 64bit, make sure they support it. Some sites have multiple links to download the program each link corresponding to the right bit and operating system.

How would you go about taking Vista off a new computer and installing a different operating system?

New computer, never been switched on. Has come with Vista installed which I would like to take off and replace with XP. What would be the procedure? Is there any way to do it without registering the copy of Vista? I'm not computer illiterate - I've just never done this before! Thanks! How would you go about taking Vista off a new computer and installing a different operating system?
Buy a full version of the previous OS (NOT an upgrade). Format the hard drive. I think you can still do this in vista from Disk management. Install as you would normally. Note: make sure you can boot from the CD first!

OR buy a new hard drive and take out the vista one. That'll give you the option of installing vista for free in the future. That's what I'd do.How would you go about taking Vista off a new computer and installing a different operating system?
hi yeah i agree with above answer. you can really cheap external hard drives these days, so if i were u i would copy all the vista hard drive info on to an external hard drive (in case you want to install vista ever in the future) and then i would reformat the computer hard drive. after that install the windows xp. try ebay for legal copies or bit torrents for illegal ones (if you want to risk it)
I agree with Meg W - buy and install another Hard Drive putting your favoured OS onto it %26amp; take out the Vista Drive

How to add old hard drive (XP) to new computer (Vista)?

I just purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. I would like to remove the hard drive from my other computer (with XP) and add it to this new one. I don't want to replace the current one, I just want to have two hard drives (greedy, I guess, lol) on this new system. I plan on making it so I can choose to run XP or Vista, but that comes later. Right now I'm trying to put the old hard drive in. I've replaced CD/DVD drives, but never a hard drive.

Question: I'm a bit confused on the need to reformat. Do I have to reformat if I plan on making my old drive a slave drive? Or is reformatting only if I plan on making it the primary drive?

Thank you!How to add old hard drive (XP) to new computer (Vista)?
The solution I'd recommend would be to purchase an external enclosure, put the old drive in it, then connect it for use as a backup drive. As long as you just need to use it for additional storage, and not for installing programs, this will work well, and allow you to easily move the drive to another system if and when needed. How to add old hard drive (XP) to new computer (Vista)?
Just make it your XP drive a slave, then figure out how to put it in your case, i havent seen it so i cant advise you there. to make it choose which os when you boot up, you have to enable vista's dual boot option. this can easily be done using easyBCD
you first question should be, do i have the right motherboard for this hard drive. at the end of the hard drive, there should be 2 ports. one for power, and one that leads to the motherboard, you need to look at the ports on the motherboard and see if they match. if they do, then move to the next step.

i would recommend doing a google search, its going to give you the most detailed steps
ok heres what you need to know. There is a little swtich in the back of all hard drives that sets it to slave or master. You want your set to slave. You do not have to reformat it to do this but you will have to reinstall Xp. Why? because unless your new machine contains the same motherboard as your old machine windows will see it a s a major hardware upgrade and force you to reinstall. Also the way windows configures on install relies heavly on your motherboard so you have to reinstall XP in order to use it on the new computer.
reformatting will remove all data on the drive- just plug it in as you normally would- with IDE it should be a secondary master or a slave, or on SATA it does not matter.
you can put the ';xp drive'; as a slave or secondary master but not as primary master. if you just want to open the old files from that drive, there's no problem. but if you want to have a dual booth, or let say you want to choose on the start up if xp or vista, thats another story.

  • Can I downgrade my Vista laptop to XP?

I got an HP laptop to replace a 2 year old compaq laptop with XP. After 11 months of Vista, I havn't found any advantages to Vista. On the contrary. There are so many annoying bugs. Vista takes up 40 gigs of hard disk space! I can't run software I frequently used with XP. My computer runs slow even though it has 3 gigs of ram. My xp laptop ran equally fast with 512 mb of ram!. I h8 Vista! Approximately how much will it cost to downgrade it at a tech shop? Can I downgrade my Vista laptop to XP?
11 months later and you haven't figure out yet the superiority of Vista over XP?? WOW. I run Vista for 2 years now ,I installed it for the first time in my old 512mb computer and it run without problems. If you have a powerful computer and having problems with vista your computer is probably abused/neglect and you are still running the crap demo and services that came with it.

If you are not trying to install ancient software everything works with Vista or it has a patch for it.Like the sony media manager you are having problems, there is a version 2.5 you can download for free and works without a problem with Vista. As for the rest of the problems you have is bad configuration or bad maintenance status.

Vista takes 10GB of space because it is more powerful OS and has more features.Do you expect an improved OS requiring the same specs with an older one?Win95 require few MB of disk space and only 8mb of ram.Would you install it on your computer? Your new computer is MADE for the new more power hungry operating system .You don't have a 512mb ram and 20GB drive so why do you complain? Vista only requires a little over 1GB to run flawlessly and if you turn off the visual and the extra like the sidebar your computer will fly.

If you have SP1 installed there are no bags no compatibility issues no problem.I use it and abuse it for 2 years now and I know it. Instead of asking help on how to cripple your computer by installing a dead OS ,use this forum to get help with what troubles you.Remember....there is nothing on Vista that can't be turned off, disabled, modified,or even hacked to solve your problem. All you have to do is ask.Can I downgrade my Vista laptop to XP?
I don't believe you. Vista is far superior to XP in just about every way. It's more stable, easier to use, etc. If it's running slow, it's probable your computer is infected with malware of some sort. And almost all XP software works just fine with Vista without any modifications at all.

BTW, RAM is not a measure of performance or speed. More ram means you have more RAM, not that the computer is going to be any faster.

To answer your main question, when we did this kind of service at Best Buy, we'd typically charge about $200 plus the cost of a legitimate version of Windows XP (if you don't already have a VALID license)
2 years later....there are still morons! Next time don't buy the piece of crap from walmart for $300.
You'll need to use XP cd at boot time to install and if that gives you problems then you'll have to format the hard drive (use a start up disk and look up the dos commands for doing this) first then use the CD. If you don't have an XP disk (came preinstalled on your first machine) then that will probably cost the most. It also depends on if you want pro or home. If you're not a techy, then home should be fine. You shouldn't pay more than a few hundred (including XP) and if you have the CD and want to try it yourself, free. Either way make SURE you backup your pertinent data to an external hard drive or something before starting any of this.
I don't care much for Vista myself. Hard to find files that I just saved in specific folders. I'm like, ';Where's the freaking file? I just saved it here.'; After I restart the computer, there's the new file right where it is suppose to be. Very annoying.

And shut down is a pain. I'll hit Start, Turn Off Computer, and the Turn Off selection and the computer is still on five minutes later running like I never tried to turn it off. Sometimes, I have to repeat the shutdown procedure three or four times just to shut the annoying thing down.

The Flashcards program never worked and can't seem to find a way to solve the problem either. I have tried to take it out of the laptop, but it keeps reappearing after each start up. Add/Delete programs can't seem to get rid of it.

My new Toshiba doesn't run that much faster than my Dell 2004 model which runs XP. If I could afford it, I would take Vista out of the laptop and put in XP and at least have a program that shuts down the computer with out multiple attempts.

At least the Toshiba has a DVD burner and I can create and edit videos and burn them to a disk. But, the Dell ain't going anywhere as long as I'm stuck with Vista in the laptop.

Is it impossible to make XP work on a laptop with pre-installed Vista?

Please help me get around this problem, or I will go mad! I got this HP laptop as a present, and it had Vista pre-installed, which I want to replace with XP. I formatted and just left the recovery partition, and then tried with 3 different XP CDs but in all three cases I got the blue screen of death. Why?! Is there any way to make it work? Not only that, but I searched for hardware drivers online and the only ones available on their official websites are for Vista and up. What the hell happened to user choice? So basically if a company has a deal with MS you can only use their product with that OS only? I'm very angry because it's a really good laptop and Vista is simply not my choice. If you know how to make XP work on such a laptop, let me know.

I also have another laptop with pre-installed Vista, on which I want to install Linux. Don't tell me I can't do that either!!Is it impossible to make XP work on a laptop with pre-installed Vista?
good luck you should give vista a chance

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,228Is it impossible to make XP work on a laptop with pre-installed Vista?
    no its not

just install it and it will work
Why are you wanting to get rid of Vista. I hate all the bad rep it's getting, it's actually a really nice OS. Sure it uses a tad more memory than we think it should, but jeez.

But if you're having problems installing XP then the disks your using are probably tied to a specific BIOS. Either that or are illegal copies. As for linux, it should install just fine as long as there are linux drivers for your hardware. Shouldn't be a problem, but wireless adapters seem to have the most problems with linux.
I actually had this exact problem about a week ago. You need to have your hard drive wiped clean. Once you have a newer program on your computer it is a lot harder to go backwards. Take it to a computer store and tell them you want the hard drive wiped clean and from there you can install any program you wish. until it is clean, It WILL NOT work! Trust me. I used to work in computer sales.
you have to flash your bios..go to your suppliers webpage and look for the drivers for your computer and look for the flashed bios
yes it is possible all you have to do is install Xp in a different drive
You can get XP to work on it, yes......HOWEVER, if you want to retain full functionality of your new HP laptop I strongly suggest you keep Vista.

Any time you will need HP support for anything on that PC they will not help you unless Vista is on it. That's what it was designed to run with.

Besides that you will probably lose some of the hardware functions due to the factory installed drivers %26amp; software being removed. The HP recovery tools will no longer be available to you.

    Here's some friendly %26amp; sincere advice :

Keep Vista %26amp; you'll see after a while that it's really not the anti-Christ.

I had to move to Vista a while ago because I was obliged to familiarize myself with it for work reasons ... you know what ? Now I wouldn't go back to XP even if you paid me.... it's great %26amp; believe me I am no pushover. I am a power user by anyone's standards, %26amp; have little tolerance for crap.

Yes, there are a few minor flaws (you probably won't even notice them) but the advantages totally outweigh them.

Take the time to learn it %26amp; tweak it to look %26amp; work like XP did for you.....I guarantee that you will be surprised at how soon you change your mind.

    regards,

How do I downgrade Vista to XP without the CD?

Basically I bought a new PC from PC world, and have had nothing but trouble with it, on paper its a monster, but the cd drive didnt work so i replaced that now it does, but, my problem is I bought a new game (Dragon Age: Origins) and tried to install it on my pc, and everytime i do it just freezes, then I tried my gf's laptop, and it said the cd was corrupt...then I tried my mothers laptop, and it worked fine, no hassle at all...Could this be a vista problem? I think it is so i want to downgrade it, or upgrade to windows 7 if theres a free option, as Vista has been nothing but crap, and I'm not willing to pay for something that should work regardless. How do I downgrade Vista to XP without the CD?
It doesn't really sound like a O/S problem. It does sound like the CD is flaky so I would contact EA to see what they say (it is not unknown for an initial release to be bad).

I would not change O/S until you can confirm that it is not the disk you have - you have no guarantee that things will be different with another O/S.

Why not return it from where you bought and have them replace it?How do I downgrade Vista to XP without the CD?
Just get the Windows 7 upgrade, which you would have got free if you brought the PC after July 2009... Don't downgrade to XP coz if you have brought a PC that works good with Vista that should be a pretty good Specs..
The most simple way to do this is to just format your PC and install the XP. this is the only way to come out of this crap.
i aggree with you vista is ****! but there is no way yo downgrade without the xp disk
ya vista sucks welcome to the mob at Microsofts door.

I think an upgrade dvd for vista home to windows 7 home is $50. As far as downgrading thats going to cost $100 for XP home (yes there are illegal options too, but you'll have to find them on your own), which they should be stopping support for sometime in the next 12 months.

Personally I like windows 7, but there are still problems with it, but its better then buying XP at this point only because I know MS is going to cut support for it soon.

As far as getting it working on vista now I would suggest using compatibility mode for Windows XP and see what happens.

How do I replace a printer on my office network, while keeping the shared location of the printer the same?

We have 20 or so Windows XP and Vista machines sharing a printer on the network. It's almost dead. no it is not when you buy a new printer install the driver on computer number one on the router and set it shared printer and default printer the on each computer on the network delete the old driver and install network drover the computer will search and find the driver you installed on the first computer and install driver to the other computer and you have to set it as default printer on the second computer ad do this for every computer on the network. How do I replace a printer on my office network, while keeping the shared location of the printer the same?

I agree with you ...XP is better than Vista. Would it be easier just to buy a new harddrive and remove your old one? lt's not hard to replace a laptop harddrive and you could just put XP on that one instead.

Just a thought....New laptop with vista basic, no install disk included?
Almost 2 years later and there are still morons that downgrade a brand new computer!!!! Look at the calendar guy,it is not 2002 anymore.
people aren't afraid of ';upgrading'; their cars and clothes every few months/years but their OS... oh well.

just find a friend with a vista disk. you legally have a license to run vista so i don't think it'll be against copyright laws to get a copy of the os you're running.

If you reformatted your comp by yourself you probably didn't do it right. Take it to someone that knows what there doing.
find out what your computer's specs are and try doing this simple trick:

google search: *name of the driver* driver download

    ex: 'ASUS N32-SLI' driver download

And start downloading and installing them 1 by 1, I assume your graphic card is nvidia/ati , go to their official websites www.nvidia.com/www.ati.com and find the drivers you need.
this is from HP and most manufactures have the same statements

HP does not recommend changing the operating system from Windows Vista to Windows XP and does not support doing so. The outcome may leave your computer in an unknown state, functionality may be diminished, and you may need to acquire Windows XP compatible application software, drivers, or even hardware.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum
You will need to go to the machine manufacturer's siter and download appropriate XP drivers for the machine. If they do not have any, you either go back to Vista, or throw the machine away.
The reason you are not getting the answers you need is because you have missed out the make %26amp; model of your computer. To obtain the drivers, you must visit the manufactures website. However, if the computer was built specifically for Vista then some of the XP drivers may not be available.

    wdw
Ok, so first off... You bought a computer, that had vista on it? then you bought a windows XP CD? and used it to format the computer and install XP on the computer? Am I right? (just want to make sure first, otherwise my suggestions are moot points)

If I am then the answer is as easy as pie. Go to the website of who ever made you computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc) and download the drivers for your model number computer.

See what happens is, since you did a clean install, and used a windows XP CD, there were no drivers installed, why? simple, cause Microsoft does not make computers, they make software, and since Bill and his crew did not know what kind of computer you have, they said, forget the drivers, just give them the software, and have HP, Dell, Sony, (and whoever else makes computer) have the drivers for there computer on there own website.

This will fix your Sound, (cause sound card is not installed till you download the driver)

Video card (cause again, not installed till you download the driver)

Direct X (again video card problem)

Slowness (well you may want to do those things first, and then maybe a BIOS Update.

    But that should do it.
Find out which moherboard you have and go on the maufacturers website and click support or drivers and select your motherboard version. There should be drivers there.
It sounds like vista is your best option. Problem with rolling back is some components are not supported by the manufacturer in XP. Dell has there own drivers for everything andalthough you can use the basic driver its not going to work as well as dell's vista driver.

Vista does have a stepp learning curve and can be annoying with all the questions but it is a better OS then XP (Marginally). And it will support all your ram which is potentionally one reason your PC is now slow. you have to understand XP is almost 10 years old. It does not support much of the new technology.

The other issue is if you have further issue and you need to contact your pc manufacturer, they will probably tell you that they can't support you and since you are a self proclaimed non computer wiz this could be problematic for you.

Even if you hate vista you will probably end up hating XP more in the long run. and remember there are tons of options in vista to make it more XP like.

How do I wipe Windows Vista off and Replace it with Windows XP Home Edition?

Recently had problems with our BT Home Hub Wireless Internet.

We have 3 Laptops in the house, 2 have XP and one has Vista - The Vista has nothing but problems with the connectivity to the Hub and limited connectivity to the Internet and I have read that this is a common problem with Vista and the BT homehub.

So ive tried to fix it but to no avail, and I have now decided that Id just rather get rid of the vista and replace it with XP (like the other two have) to ensure there is no more future problems, because quite frankly its becoming a pain in the backside.

My question is, could somebody please give me a quick step by step guide to installing XP and getting rid of the Vista that's on it?..Do i just boot the PC from the cd drive and the XP cd will do it all by itself?...

Thanks to all who reply in advance! How do I wipe Windows Vista off and Replace it with Windows XP Home Edition?
Set your lappy to boot from CD.

Stick in the XP disk, choose 'run from cd' should it appear. When the option appears choose ' perform quick format'.

    Install away!

Depending on makes, the manufacturer should supply you with an XP disk, it is worth asking them.

Try Ubuntu on it as well. How do I wipe Windows Vista off and Replace it with Windows XP Home Edition?
    formatt your pc
You can boot to it, but it isn't magic. You will have to follow the prompts to set it up.
You cannot install an older operating system over a newer one. In other words, Windows XP will not install over Vista, but you can erase Vista and install XP from scratch. To do this, get a Windows 98 boot disk (stay with me here), and delete the partitions. All of them so you have a blank drive. Then simply install XP as you normally would. Here' some great prices on software:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/…

If you need to know how to partition a hard drive, just ask.
Before making any quick moves, verify the driver availability from the PC mfgr'.

Vista drivers won't go on XP.

While you're at the mfgr's website, get all the XP drivers available, put them to a CD...you'll need them later I'm sure.
You will have to ensure that your laptop has the necessary drivers to run XP. Look at the manufacturers website for more details. You need to be looking into 'downgrading Vista to XP' in your searches as that is what you'll be doing.

How can I replace Windows Vista with Windows XP?

I have the Windows XP Pro disc but when I try to install it, it says the version on this pc is newer than the one being installed. And it won't go any further. Help please!!!How can I replace Windows Vista with Windows XP?
You can install it that way, you need to boot off the CD, then choose to delete the partition, XP will then create a new partition to install itself. How can I replace Windows Vista with Windows XP?
have you gonr to the manufacturers website and looked to make sure they have xp drivers for your pc?
I have installed XP on many new desktop PC's. I would first recommend creating the recovery disc set if you haven't already. You will not be able to install without first booting to the Windows XP CD. Keep in mind that you can only use it on 1 PC at a time. You will also need to do a little work to locate the drivers for your hardware as Windows will not support everything. This can be done fairly easily by looking on the board for a part number. You can then do a search for that part number. In a lot of newer desktops I have noticed they are using either Asus, MSI or ECS manufactured boards. Yours may be different so don't do anything until you are confident you have all the drivers needed for your particular machine.

If you post what make and model your PC is I can more than likely locate the drivers and post the links for you.

Bought a laptop with Vista and put XP on it also.

    --------------------------------------…

This is a nice computer. Thought someone may like to see.

The VistaBootPro people say this can't be done.

I bought a new laptop at Walmart today. Gateway MT6840-$698.00

    I bought a Gateway 7330GZ last year for $1150.00 {80 GB’s , 512 MB of Ram}

I bought this one for a customer and have to share my thoughts for those interested.

This Gateway MT 6840 is a really fast computer and has 160 GB hard drive and 1GB of memory and came with Vista premium. It also came with a recovery DVD of Vista premium.

It is so fast I just ordered a 1 GB memory stick for my 7330GZ from Newegg.

OK, here is what I did when I got the new MT6840 home.

    I’ll number the steps.

    1. I put a Windows XP CD in the drive and booted to install.

    2. When it asked me what I wanted to do I deleted the recovery partition and I deleted the Vista OS partition.

    3. Now I had 160 GB unformatted hard drive and chose {quick} format and installed Windows XP Professional.

    4. It installed perfectly and I had a 160 GB hard drive with Windows XP Professional.

    5. I installed Microsofts’s NetFramework 1.1

    6. I installed Partition Magic. BUT NOT “Boot Magic”.

    7. I installed PowerQuest Drive Image 7.0.

    8. I opened Partition Magic and right clicked on Drive C {160GB’s} and clicked on label and labeled it “January”.

    9. I booted the computer.

    10. I opened Partition Magic and in the upper left hand corner selected “create a new partition.”

    11. I made the new partition 120 GB’s and took all the space from January.

    12. I made sure it was a primary partition. {Click on primary because default in partition magic is {extended logical}.

    13. In the lower left hand corner click on apply. The computer will reboot to do this.

    14. Now you have a 40 GB {Partition 1} with Windows XP operating system.

    15. You also have a PRIMARY {Partition 2} of 120 GB’s.

    16. Open Partition Magic and right click on the 120GB partition and click on label and label it February.

    17. Now I opened Partition Magic and click on “create a new partition”.

    18. Unchecked all the boxes except February and created a logical partition 80 GB’s. Clicked apply. Took all the space from February.

    19. Now February is 40 GB’s.

    20. Open Partition Magic and right click on the 80 GB and label it March.

    21. I opened Partition Magic and in the upper left hand corner selected “create a new partition.”

    22. Unchecked all the boxes except March and created a logical partition 40 GB’s. Clicked apply. Took all the space from March.

    23. Right clicked and labeled the new partition April.

    24. I opened Partition Magic and in the upper left hand corner selected “create a new partition.”

    25. Unchecked all the boxes except April and created a logical {FAT 32}partition two {2}GB’s. That’s right, only 2 GB’s. Clicked apply. Took all the space from April.

    26. Right clicked on the 2GB’s and labeled it “Boot Magic”. But still have NOT installed boot magic.

    27. I then right clicked on Partition Two Labeled February and at the bottom “click on advanced and set Partition Two ACTIVE {the partition it will boot to}. Partition 2 is a blank partition with NOTHING on it.

    28. I put the Vista DVD in the DVD rom drive and booted.

    29. Vista loaded and asked me which partition I wanted to load Vista on and I selected February.

    30. Vista installed perfectly {exactly the way it was when I bought it.} and I booted it several times to make sure. I installed some small programs including Adobe 8.0 and Nero 7.

    31. AT THIS POINT I CAN’T GET OUT OF VISTA.

    32. The only way to get out of Vista is to put the “Boot Magic Rescue Disk Floppy” in the USB drive {I use an external floppy disk that plugs into USB port}and boot the computer.

    33. The floppy loads and asks me which partition I want to boot to.

    34. I choose Partition 1 {January} and press enter and unclick the floppy from the floppy drive so it doesn’t load again.

    35. It boots perfectly to Windows XP Professional.

    36. NOW I INSTALL BOOT MAGIC and it goes right into the 2GB partition labeled “Boot Magic”.

    37. I now click on the “Boot Magic” folder and click on the wrench folder {It has a picture of a wrench”.}

    38. I make sure only January is the default {Windows XP} and put a check mark in the box in the lower left hand corner and reboot.

    39. The computer boots to Boot Magic and gives me a choice of Windows XP or Vista.

    40. After I boot several times to each one to make sure it is a true dual boot I open boot magic again and click on each partition and click on properties and label one XP Pro and one Vista. Now when it boots to “Boot Magic” I see which is which.

This whole thing took about two hours.

    Cheers:Jimmy Carter

This is a complicated question to answer. It depends heavily on the specific computer you are trying to downgrade to XP. what is the model number?

Keep in mind that on newer computers some hardware, usually sound cards, will not be supported on older operating systems.
Your using windows vista and your trying to use a program that is not compatible to vista right? If thats the case all you need to do is go to control panel, click programs and click use an older version and find the file you need to change the compatibility from vista to xp.
Ohhhh. So Sorry. Mac user here!!!

  • How do I uninstall Vista from my laptop?

I bought a laptop a few years ago that had Windows Vista already installed on it and I am sooo fed up with how slow it runs. I miss using Windows XP! I don't want to go to Best Buy and spend hundreds of $$ to do what I could probably do myself.

How do I uninstall Windows Vista and replace it with Windows XP?How do I uninstall Vista from my laptop?
Step one, back up any data from your laptop you want to keep.

Step two Get a XP ';FULL'; install CD, not the upgrade and boot the laptop from the CD

Step three, during XP install, choose the option to ';reformat'; the disk.

    Step four, Nirvana....

Can not Downgrade from Vista to XP on laptop. Please help.?

Alright. I've been trying to downgrade this laptop for my girlfriend because she wants it downgraded to XP. I have the XP disc and the Vista disc with me. I've tried formatting the HD. Partitioning it to have Vista on one and XP on the other, and every time I get this error:

';Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-Supplied diagnostic or setup program.

    Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.';

F3 of course restarts the computer. Now I know there is a HD in there that is indeed powering up, but for some reason it's not powering up, (maybe?) when I'm using the XP disc. How do I fix this, as I've looked around on the internet for a while and couldn't find anything that worked.

The model of the laptop is an HP dv6149us if that helps in any way. Everything inside of it is what came with it, except the ram had to be replaced because it fried. Can not Downgrade from Vista to XP on laptop. Please help.?
    Ok... Simple problem :)

You have a special hard drive controller in the laptop and it requires a driver. You will have to go to the manufacturers website and download the driver for the hard drive controller. When you setup XP on the laptop, you will need to press F6 and install the driver (probably burned on a CD). Once the laptop has the driver it will allow you to continue with setup of XP.

When you get the answer, I might use it. I hate Vista on my laptop. Good luck!

I just reinstalled vista from cab files on a friends laptop, uninstalled the Norton which was on a 60?

day trial, replaced it with bit defender. How do I get rid of that Icon? I am new to vista, use xp myself.I just reinstalled vista from cab files on a friends laptop, uninstalled the Norton which was on a 60?
If Vista ever gives you a hard time ';saying you need administrative rights'; to do a download or make changes (Even tho you are the system administrator) then

    do the following...

Go to START...CONTROL PANEL.....USERS ACCOUNTS...and turn off the UAC (User Accounts Control)...windows will want to reboot...make any changes you need...then go turn the UAC back on...system will want to reboot again.

Problem with vista and blue screen of death. need help.?

Blue screen on my laptop with error msg saying dumping memory...and some countdown to 100, then it reboots?

before that happened, i tried to install sims2, but it said that it's not compatible with vista. then i also tried installing alcohol120%...and that started it, when i tried to run alcohol, it also said that it's not compatible with vista, then after a few seconds, the blue screen appeared.

i also tried booting with safe mode(so i can uninstall sims2 and alcohol), but it still doesnt work and still having the blue screen after loading the components of windows.

but each time i tried booting on normal mode, it does continue to boot until it shows my desktop, but after a few seconds, the blue screen will appear again. (with the same error msg)

what seems to be the problem and how can i solve this?

It happened to me a month ago,if you have no external back-up drive you can try putting in the original disc that came with your computer and resore it.

You will solve the problem but will loose all your data ,your computer will be just as it came out of the box.

Then you can re-install any programs you have the original discs for such as ';word'; etc..Buy a 300 gig back up external drive it saved me.Problem with vista and blue screen of death. need help.?
Restart it in safe mode .... seems you have a virus.

Restart in safe mode, run virus scan, run spybot, and remove any programs you recently installed.

XP has no taskbar after fiddling with vista?

I tried to install vista earlier today, I liked it so decided to re-install it with the XP drive plugged in (I took it out on the first attempt of vista just in case it wiped all my files).

After the first reboot after the install of Vista it decided to error scan my 80gb hard drive with XP on it, it replaced 120,000 file security ID's taking the best part of an hour.

After installing vista I booted up to XP (no OS choice menu, changed HDD boot priority in BIOS) and there was no taskbar. I can access taskmanager (ctrl+alt+del), run (start+r) and windows explorer (start+e).

Fine I thought, I can backup all I need to onto another hard drive and install Vista on the XP drive. I went to copy a folder, right clicked it and clicked copy, pressed edit%26gt;paste but it was greyed out... It does this no matter what, or to where I am copying and pasting, it is greyed out.

Anybody have an idea on how to fix this? It happens in safe mode as well.

It is XP Media Centre Edition SP2.

    Thanks

JackXP has no taskbar after fiddling with vista?
if it were me, i'd run a linux live distrobution (slax is nice) to try to save the files I know I need, export them to an external harddrive if possible, then hard format and reinstall vista correctly

edit:// i'd like to add that slax is found at www.slax.org and basically you make a boot cd for it, pop that in, boot to your cd drive, and the linux distrobution runs off of your ram instead of using your harddrive, so you should be able to load that up at least.XP has no taskbar after fiddling with vista?
You have totally trashed your XP installation. You should have left the other drive in, it would then have been recognised by Vista as an alternative system and left alone. By adding it afterwards it has treated it as a new drive, by changing security IDs it has removed most of your control over it. The only chance you have is to get an external, or a third internal drive, and copy data from the XP drive while running Vista. Whatever happens you need to do a completely clean install.
I guess you lost every thing, your files are there but you can't get to them.If it was my computer I would format and install vista the right way.

Just format the 7 %26amp; install the XP cd/dvd...Looking to replace windows 7 with xp.wish to know how.?
Buy the software first :) then insert the disk and install. Windows 7 is not bad and if u get professional u can run XP programs
I think you will love windows 7, i thought that i wanted XP on my new computer but i was wrong. if you want to get XP, you will have to have Windows 7 Professional (for xp mode) or higher. YOU CANNOT DO THIS WITH Windows 7 Home or Starter... in my opinion stay with 7... it may look like vista but it is way better.
You can install both XP and windows 7 on your PC.

Use Virtual windows software(also known as VMware)

    Enjoy both windows..
XP has the most software and hardware tested on it. I am sticking with XP for another year to give software/hardware developers time to test their stuff on Windows 7. It will take another year just to get pre Windows 7 software off the store shelves. One department store had their employees stick Windows 7 stickers on any software/hardware package. That is not how things works. There have been plenty of complaints from those immediately upgrading to windows 7. Some PC manufacturers have even offered a free XP for certain models. Windows 7 Pro, enterprise and ultimate editions have an XP mode. That way you get used to Windows 7 as XP gets phased out. Extended support for XP ends in 2014. Probably because most of the marketplace still runs XP. It is a significant capital investment for companies to bring in new computers and new operating systems. It is the politcal power of companies that is extending the life of XP. It is probably considered a national security issue in regards to a nations economy. A lot of companies have computers that do not support Windows 7. I am not talking about upgrading one or two computers. I am talking about upgrading or purchasing 1000s within the larger companies. It is not in some budgets.

Back to your question, do what the others said about just installing XP or getting one of those Win7 editions that have XP mode.
Windows 7 is really good and user friendly.it is way better than vista or -with due respect - XP.

And you will have to get the WINDOWS XP cd along with its DRIVER cd and then format your computer.

for formatting u will require Windows XP cd n once u install Windows, u can install drivers and ur done:)

now u may also put up a question bout how to format:P since too much info together = mess!! hehe :P

    so all the best:D
Steps to downgrade windows 7 to xp

STEP 1. Open your Windows 7 drive (generally C drive) and make sure that you haven’t removed the Windows.old folder, which was created by Windows while installing Windows 7 on XP drive. Remember, without this folder you won’t be able to proceed further.

STEP 2. Now, check the size of Windows.old folder by right-clicking and then selecting properties. You need to make sure that Windows.old folder must be less than two times the amount of free hard drive space available on Windows 7 system drive (C drive). If the Windows.old folder size is two times larger, disable system restore utility and also use disk cleanup tool to get some free space.

STEP 3. Insert your Windows 7 installation disc into DVD-ROM and restart your system. Press any key when prompted to boot from DVD.

STEP 4. Choose your language, time, keyboard type and then click on Next button to continue.

STEP 5. In the Install Windows screen, click Repair your computer option to get System Recovery Options.

STEP 6. Now select your Windows 7 OS and note down your Windows 7 Drive letter before clicking on Next.

STEP 7. In the next window, click Command Prompt to start downgrading from Windows 7 to XP.

STEP 8. At first you need to transfer all the data of your Windows 7 drive to a folder. So type the following commands one by one and then press enter after each command (here we’re assuming that “D” is your Windows 7 drive letter).

    D:

    Md Win7

    Move Windows Win7\Windows

    Move “Program Files” “Win7\Program Files”

    Move Users Win7\Users

    Attrib –h –s –r ProgramData

    Move ProgramData Win7\ProgramData

    Rd “Documents and Settings”

STEP 9. Next, you need to copy all the contents of Windows.old folder to the drive. Again, follow all the commands given below one by one and then press enter after each command.

    move /y d:\Windows.old\Windows d:\

    move /y “d:\Windows.old\Program Files” d:\

    move /y “d:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings” d:\

STEP 10. Next, you need to restore the boot sector by typing the following command:

    E:\boot\bootsect /nt52 d:

STEP 11. At last restore the boot.ini file by entering the following commands:

    Attrib –h –s –r boot.ini.saved

    Copy boot.ini.saved boot.ini

STEP 12. Now type Exit and restart your system to get back to Windows XP again.

its pretty simple......I have Vista home, want to take off my laptop. I want to replace it with windows XP, How do I do this.?
u'll need to buy a copy of xp and do a reformat dont use any pirated versions they dont workI have Vista home, want to take off my laptop. I want to replace it with windows XP, How do I do this.?
    Ok...here's the simplified version...

Step-1: Buy XP Licence and Install disk.

    Step-2: ';Format C:';

Step-3: Insert XP disk into ROM drive, close drawer.

Step-4: Boot-up computer...ROM drive will activate and begin installing XP.

For the REAL simple version...obtain the ';XP Upgrade'; disk for Vista (preferably from the same vendor you obtained the unit from), insert, and follow the step-by-step instructions in the Wizard that launches from there.

Please note...depending on the vendor and store, replacing Vista technically ';voids'; the warranty, and without a LOT of headaches and issues, means that they will NOT work on your machine.

    Good Luck!
Why do you want to degrade your OS from better Windows version to an old one such as Windows XP? Maybe, you have not discovered the better side of Windows Vista yet. But anyway, this is how you do it: Make it sure you have your laptop's packaged CD drivers for Windows XP. If you have your Windows XP installer, you boot it from your Optical drive. The installer will direct you to the Disk Partition procedure, delete the partition(s) and create a new one or two. (If you want, you can make the partitions 50% - 50%. Just type 50% or divide the total bytes into 2 and then enter the result). Afterwards, it will direct you to format the initial disk's partition. Use NTFS file system. Follow the installer instructions untill Windows XP is fully installed. You can now format the 2nd partition if you created it using Windows XP format command in the ';My Computer';. Afterwhich, you need to install all device drivers using the package driver CD. Install applications, antivirus, etc...
As far as I know, there's no way to replace Vista with XP without having to format the hard-drive. This can be done by simply booting from the Windows XP disc and selecting the hard drive. Once it warns you there's already an operating system installed, you have the option to format the drive.

    Assess Hardware Requirements:

    * Windows Vista Premium Ready PC's include at least 1GB system RAM and 128 MB graphics memory.

    * To help further optimize the Windows Vista experience, Dell recommends Premium Ready PCs be configured with 2 GB dual-channel (2-DIMMs) system RAM, a Dual-Core processor, a 7200 rpm Hard Drive and at least a 256 MB discrete graphics card.

Before you upgrade to Windows Vista , you should consider backing up your most important files or saving them to a safe location. Windows Vista庐 will still have access to these files after installation, but in the event there is data loss you may not have a backup.

    Typical backup options include:

    * Using Windows Backup or other third party backup software

    * Writing data to a CD or DVD

    * Copying data to an external hard drive

    * Copying data to a network folder on another computer

Windows Vista expects that you have a previous version of Microsoft Windows installed on your computer. Windows Vista supports two Windows installations for upgrading:

    * Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

    * Windows VistaTM (other Windows Vista Editions)

Once you've decided to upgrade to Windows Vista, you may want to reference this information throughout the installation process.

In addition, make sure you have your Windows XP installation CD available in case the installaction process is not successful. You may need to uninstall Windows Vista and you'll need this CD to restore your system along with your backup data method.

Here are several steps on how to re-install Windows XP:

    1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD/DVD drive. Power on the computer.

    2. Setup will start copying files, which depending on your system can take a while.

    3. Next you will get the option to Repair or enter Setup. Choose to enter Setup.

    4. Setup will scan for previous Windows installations.

    5. After several confirmation screens and you choose the location of your installation, Setup will show a progress box and reboot

    when copying files is complete.

    6. From this point, you will follow the on screen prompts.

    7. Logon to XP and apply Service Pack and Critical updates from Windows Update before installing any software or hardware.

    8. Install your anti-virus software.

    9. Install all other applications.
You need to re-install XP you do NOT need Vista because that version of Windows is designed for the new DUAL PROCESSOR CPU's, so the version of XP is OPTIMUM for YOUR computer.

Besides that... the people who HAVE Vista installed aren't all that happy with it and the people who have tried to replace XP with it are even LESS happy with the change
If you are not able to install Windows Vista after your system is booted then you can boot your system with the Windows Vista CD itself and install the Vista OS.
vista is garbage and will slow down your machine big time.
tell microsoft to give you a new cd
