I have a 6- year old Dell desktop that I'd like to replace with a new Dell, but I don't want Vista. I have the original install discs for XP Pro. Will I be able to install XP Pro on another desktop? How many times can this be done?
Thanks!Windows XP Pro Licensing limits?
Exactly what cherria said. As long as you are only using it on ONE computer, then Microsoft will be off your back.Windows XP Pro Licensing limits?
You can install XP for as long as you like, although Microsoft will stop supporting it at some point i,e they will stop issuing security patches.
In terms of installing it on a new machine, you can do this as many times as you buy a new machine provided you remove it from the old one you are selling or junking. i.e. one version of XP can only be operational on one machine at a time.
they do have a limit on how many times you can use but i dont know how many times. im thinking i used mine somewhere around 10 to 12 times and it gave me a message that it has been used to many times

Laptop/Notebook XP HDD upgrade?
I have a Packard Bell Laptop/Notebook PC with Windows XP installed. It has the Vista Transformation Pack 6 %26amp; Samurize installed. It runs really slow (even though these themes take up very little cpu power, total cpu power is usually about 17% used %26amp; ram about 60% even with a ram usage forcer app) %26amp; video capturing even before these themes were installed was choppy. So I'm guessing that it's the hdd that makes things slow. I think it has a 5200rpm hdd, I want to upgrade it to a 7200rpm or faster hdd. How would I do this? I have a dvd with lall the Windows XP files on it including the I386 folder %26amp; I have a non-microsoft boot disc. I re-installed Widnows XP on the original HDD, so how difficult would it be to install it on a new one. Could I just format it via usb in windows xp %26amp; copy all the files over from the bootdisc, then plug the hdd in replacing the original one? would this work?Laptop/Notebook XP HDD upgrade?
No, you'd need a transfer kit to transfer the files over to the new hard drive, simply copying the folders over WILL NOT work. That being said, Newegg has just the thing, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as this will transfer your existing installation and make it bootable on the new drive then all you have to do is swap them out, put the old drive in the enclosure and you can use it as external storage if you want. Boot from the included CD and follow the directions.
That being said, I doubt the hard drive is responsible (in whole) for the choppiness and it couldn't hurt to scan for spyware, viruses, run the disk cleaner and defrag the drive. After you've done that I'd look at your specs... how much memory do you have (1GB should be adequate for what you are doing), how fast and what type processor do you have (if it's not a Pentium M, Pentium 4, Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor of at least 1.6GHz then you're in trouble) and lastly for the video capture what kind/type of video device are you using and do you have a dedicated video card, if you don't have a dedicated video card, I would almost expect these types of problems.
It's probably a combination of things that are making it slow, the hard drive is probably not one of them but you can try, it doesn't hurt to try. But keep in mind what I said.
Yeah, in addition to the hard drive I would get more memory, 192MB isn't a lot to work with, especially if you are running this stuff under XP. More memory, faster hard drive and I think you should be all set.
It sounds to me that you might have 256MB of memory with 64MB of that going to some kind of integrated graphics (correct me if I am wrong) either that or you have 64MB + 128MB memory modules (which is an odd combination). Either way you will want to get at least 512MB of memory though 1GB would be highly preferred.Laptop/Notebook XP HDD upgrade?
honestly, your best bet would be to just purchase a new cpu, because if you upgrade one thing, then it wont run well with the others, just get a new cpu
check if it is the power settings , when using the battery low performance, when using the plug power high performance. Upgrading the hdd wont do alot , upgrade the ram. Put more ram storage, if can a faster ram speed or just change to a faster cpu just like what the dude just said.
The Harddrive is always the slowest thing on a computer and although a 7200rpm would speed things up it may not be the issue. The only way your processor would be the issue is if the program requires a faster speed, but I doubt that this is the issue.
(As a opposed to the answer above).
By the sounds of it you are running near the upper limits of your RAM. Running at 60% is that everything or just that program? Either way you need more RAM.
It sounds like this issue may be graphic related. If the graphics are too intense for your video card that would definitely slow you down because the RAM and HD have to take over.
I seriously doubt that this is Hard drive related. But unless you are confident in your abilities to break open a laptop to swap out the HD, I would take it to a shop.
Thats a little tricky. First off, you can not upgrade the CPU in a laptop, especially a Packard Bell. PB is notorious for manufacturing junk computers that have little or no upgrade capability due to all the proprietary parts they use. The hard drive is the one part whose speed has little or no impact on overall operating speed. Your problem is related to CPU power and system RAM. If I had to guess, you probably have a Cyrix or Celeron based system, with 128MB or so of RAM. A RAM upgrade would definitely help. However, if your CPU is weak, it won't help that much.
To answer the rest of your question, no you can not take the files off the DVD and copy them to a new hard drive and make it work. you MAY be able to clone the old hard drive onto a new one, but even that doesn't work all the time, especially if the new hard drive is a larger capacity than the old one because the geometry is different. The best way to upgrade the HD is to install the new one and just install a fresh copy of XP on it. You will have to reinstall all of your programs, but believe me.. It will run better. Windows tends to need to be reinstalled every 6 months or so. You can then get a USB enclosure for your old HD and plug it in, then transfer your files/music/videos over to the new one. (note, this will NOT work for your programs.. they must be reinstalled from the original disc or setup file).
My advice though is to scrap that PB hunk of crap and buy a Dell or IBM. Toshiba's good too.

D-link DIR-628 Rangebooster N Dual Band Router won't work with my acer 5620Z laptop running with windows Vista?
Bought the router to replace the old one. all three of the other laptops work with it. They are an Acer 5620 using windows XP, Acer 5315 using windows Vista, and an Acer Aspire 5532 with windows 7. When I try to connect with the one that doesnt work, it recognizes that there is a signal, and attempts to connect for approximately one second. Then it says that it can't connect. and that it may be due to timeout or user action.
Does anyone know how to fix this??D-link DIR-628 Rangebooster N Dual Band Router won't work with my acer 5620Z laptop running with windows Vista?

No Folder Icons..(System 32 Problem I Think)?
Hey i'm on windows vista home premium - service pack 1..
I've been having this really annoying problem for over 2 months and no one at my old forum knew how to help me.
I think it's a system 32 related problem, but not totally sure.
A while back, i was fiddling around with programs like mycolors (a desktop customization program) and my folder icons got changed during the process - like permanately. I tried right clicking folders and going to customize and setting the folder image to defaults but it never worked. After a while of nothing working I tried replacing my imageres.dll in system32. My friend, who had also has windows vista uploaded his imageres.dll
I tried just replacing his with mine but windows wouldn't let me. Imageres.dll is the file that controls folder icons appearance right? He also gave me a copy of his shell32.dll. So, I downloaded this thing called BartPE that let me run a weird XP based OS off of a cd. Not all of it was in english so i couldn't read some things but i knew what i was doing for the most part. While running that, i was able to replace my imageres.dll w/ a good copy, but i got an error message (in some weird language) when i tried to replace my shell32. Still my problem is not solved. And on top of that, for some odd reason, my desktop wallpaper doesn't show up when i first turn the computer on, i have to re-apply it everytime. this started happening around when i first started using this dock called rocket dock on my desktop.
idk, what else to do..? I'm actually willing to install a fresh copy of either xp or vista, but would i lose all my files? is there an easy way to start fresh and keep your programs, files, etc.?
edit:
also thought i'd mention that i'm running windows blinds (changes appearance of OS) but this never gave me any problems..No Folder Icons..(System 32 Problem I Think)?
Don't be a jerk to yahoo answers (your question after this) . People here are generally good at computers, but you will not get a ton of help for questions that are pages long as well. I suggest uninstalling windows blinds as it is a system hook application and therefore has control over more things then you do. If you are attempting to save the operating system you have in place then you will need to use a live cd os to replace those files (linux distros are fine as most support ntfs file systems). Windows blinds being misconfigured/erroneous is a good explination of all your errors here. The more things that you have run on startup the weirder everything gets. If rocket dock also contains a system hook then it might just be a stupid application.
Solution: get linux.

How Do I Get My Windows Vista Back?
I bought an HP desktop m9100z a few months ago with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 factory installed. I didn't like it cause it was giving me problems. So I took it off and then replaced it with Windows XP Home not realizing how much more problems I would then gain. I can't use most of my hardware due to XP Home. I still have the sticker on which my KeyCode for Vista is still printed. I don't want to go buy a whole new OS DVD and I don't have the money for it. Is there any way I can either download the stuff I need to BURN to a DVD?? Or maybe some way I could get a free disk??
**Please remember that I DO have the KeyCode for the OS**How Do I Get My Windows Vista Back?
I never received a vista reinstall CD so you probably have to give the company a call and they will send it to you depending on your warranty status, I got em back because I messed up on making the burn cds with my computer, I had an hp and it gives you a window that pops up to tell you that you need to make reinstall cds with your own cds that you have to buy. I screwed it up so they just sent me new ones. How Do I Get My Windows Vista Back?

I have a printer connected to my linux OS pc, and I want to be able to use the printer with the windows vista computer also. Neither computers really detect eachother, except when I go to the printers on windows vista it says my printer name and it says its located on my computer name, but it says 'offline' and it won't work, i think it might just still be there from when i used to have windows XP installed on this computer before i replaced XP with Ubuntu. please help i just want to know how to use a printer over LAN, i heard about samba but i'm still trying to figure out how to install it, i only installed Ubuntu 2 or 3 days ago so i am really new to linuxSharing between Linux and Windows help?

Vista Computer Can't See Workgroup Computers?
I have a Vista PC connected to a Linksys Router. We had a D-Link router, which I replaced about a year ago. We had no problems with the new router until we moved to another state with a new ISP. Now we have the following symptoms:
-my laptop and my kids' computer (both running XP) cannot see the Vista computer
-the Vista computer cannot see the XP computers
-both XP computers can see each other and can connect to the internet.
-all 3 computers can ping each other
Firewalls are all turned off, and we aren't running any anti-virus, so this is not the problem. I think it may have something to do with the assigned IPs. Vista computer is 192.168.15.100. The XP computers are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.104. (notice the difference in the third bracket of numbers) If I go to ipconfig on the XP computers, it says:
connection-specific DNS suffix: zoominternet.net (this is our OLD ISP before we moved)
Can anyone shed some light on this? How can I get all of my computers to ';see'; each other for the purpose of file sharing? Thanks.Vista Computer Can't See Workgroup Computers?
I am not trying to make you mad but you need to get someone you know to help you set up the preferences to enable the file sharing on all computers, so it will work.
It isn't as simple as just making a few clicks on the computer.Vista Computer Can't See Workgroup Computers?
In the vista computer, select the network as home network and enable network discovery, file sharing etc.
You have a sharp eye for spotting that difference in the IP addresses. Actually, I'm a little surprised that it's working as well as you say it is. Are you sure that the 192.168.1.1 is accurate? That's the default address for a LinkSys router. Maybe you read it off of the ';gateway'; line on that computer.
You could try:
ipconfig/renew
on the Vista computer. Try that first; it's easy, and won't hurt anything.
But I'm thinking that running the ';new connection wizard'; might be a better solution, on all three computers.

I want to get RID OF VISTA FOREVER
and replace it with XP pro
what im saying is, How can i get XP onto this computer?
Everytime i tell it to install it says
';setup cannot continue because the version of windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.
Warning: If you choose to delete the version of windows that is currently on your computer files and settings cannot be recovered';
thats what it says, and i cant install it
How can i remove vista?PLZ help!!!!!?
I know of how you can do it, but I think you should back up all your personal files (you know saved word files, saved games, and so on) and then wonder down to a computer shop and ask a technician to do it for you.
He/She may be able to tell you if all your old programs and down loads of programs can be re-installed on the new system.PLZ help!!!!!?
Go ahead and choose to delete Vista. We all know Vista sucks balls, and getting rid of it is no easy task. Just make sure you have all your files backed up, and let the XP installer delete vista. If that doesn't work, go into the control panel, go to software, and choose to modify Windows operating software. then, delete! Once you're back to DOS, insert the XP disc, and type something along the lines of D:\install (the XP manual should have instructions for installing from DOS) Then you're back to good old reliable XP. If all else fails, Buy a mac.
U can insert the XP disc wen ur system boots and then start installing.. If u need more help, drop me a mail...

My computer monitor keeps turning off, HELP!!?
My monitor turns off while i am using the computer and when I press the power button, it turns on but the screen is still blank. I've used different monitors and even replaced my power supply. I've reformatted my PC and had to same problem with vista and xp. I got a new hard drive. and i removed my Graphic card and i also tried with it. And i made sure i had the right drivers. on the setting i put it that the PC monitor never turns off no matter how long its on idle...I've done just about everything i can. I ran virus scans as well.My computer monitor keeps turning off, HELP!!?
Do it turn off while using a certain application? If so, this application could make you be accidentally hitting buttons in a certain combination that may enable a ';hot key';. This hotkey combination may cause your computer to go into ';sleep'; or ';hibernation'; mode.

Has anyone noticed how Microsoft Vista is total crap?
More to the point how difficult is it for me to remove said ';crap'; from my machine and replace it with the likes of XP?
Oh I wish it were so simple as repairing late model cars for a livingHas anyone noticed how Microsoft Vista is total crap?
Not difficult as it is time consuming.
If you don't like Vista, I would say back up all you have onto CDs / DVDs or an external HD and do a full format of your hard drive while installing XP. One thing to make note though, if you are running a 32bit system (32 bit processor) or a 64 one, you need an OS to comply with your processor. The reason I say this is if you use a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit system, you're just going to end up bottle necking your performance. I had a problem with that, being that I have a 64 bit duel core system with also 4 gigs of RAM on my computer, the 32 bit OS would only recognize 2 gigs, but once I got a 64 bit OS, it saw the full 4.
I do hope this helps you with your question.Has anyone noticed how Microsoft Vista is total crap?
Well you need to make sure you own downgrade rights first of. if not, you will need to buy a license with downgrade rights. This keeps you legal with MS. Crap right? yeah. Secondly, Wiping Vista by using the Win XP media isnt going to working either. the system will tell you that there is a better OS loaded. You will need to delete the partition is Dos mode and recreate a clean partion with out OS and then install Win XP.
Hope this helps.
Hmm? Just buy a full install (Not upgrade) of Windows XP and boot it as the first boot drive.
When asked to press any key to proceed to install. Do it. Then install Windows XP. Should be as easy as that.

How can i install two os on a single drive so that i could later safely remove one of them?
I would like to know is it possible to install two OS on a single HDD without having to split it in two different partitions so that i could boot up Vista and also be able to stay with XP at the same time, i'm afraid that if i'll install vista and xp on the same drive then one of the system folders could get modified replaced with a new fresh empty one or simply deleted. For instance when you install a new copy of XP without deleting the old one then during installation you get warned that the folder named ';Windows'; already exists so in order to keep your files from old windows and get a fresh install you rename the new windows folder to something else but can i somehow install two OS without having to split my drive? And also if there is no other way then can i merge my two hdd partitions back again? How can i install two os on a single drive so that i could later safely remove one of them?
You'll need to repartition the empty space on the drive to allow for XP to be installed. This can normally be done with Vista's partitioning tool relatively easily.

Windows 7 paint erase or replace color?
Okay, Well Ive been using the XP and then the vista paint for years. So by no ive got down all the tricks. one of which Ive gotten very comfortable with using but cant seem to easily do on Windows 7 Paint.
One of the things you can do is by holding down the right mouse button and using the eraser, it only erases one color. Which comes in very handy when sketching in red than outling in black and erasing the red.
The other trick is to just replace the red with white by changing the background color and right clicking while drawing.
Well, Due to my idioticness, I didnt think to check my ability to do these things before working hard on a picture on paint than finding out the hard way.
Anybody know how to do those tricks on Windows 7 paint? I could really use the help.Windows 7 paint erase or replace color?
Try GIMP. It's free and can do so much more than just getting rid of one color!horses use for cayote hunting

Backing up windows vista?
I am running vista on my computer and my AVG virus checker found a virus in Win32/polycrypt. The computer is new, so it should be clean outside that. I am trying reason that reformatting will get rid of the virus. but it has just occured to me that i have never backed it up, or have never really understood how it worked in Vista.
I guess i have 2 questions.
1. how does the vista backing up work? There arent any boot discs like in XP.
2. Will replacing everything with the backup, or reformatting help my situation?Backing up windows vista?
If you're running the Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista, you can automate the entire process of backing up your data files on a regular basis by using the Back Up Files wizard. (The Back Up Files wizard in Windows Vista Home Basic does not include the automated scheduling feature, but it will remind you to back up your files periodically.) In order to streamline the entire backup procedure, Microsoft redesigned this version of its backup utility so that it only backs up data files -- application and system files are not included. (The ability to back up all your files is handled by the Windows Complete PC Backup utility, which I covered in a previous article.)
In this edition of the Windows Vista Report, I'll take a closer look at the Back Up Files wizard. As I do, I'll walk you through a backup operation.
I will Provide you link where you got all the wizards how it works and you get the example :==

Question about my laptop?
I'm using it at the moment, and it has 5 mb worth of bad sectors. My mate and I scanned the hard drive with two software packages and discovered that the bad sectors were input/output. Meaning, my hard drive is going to crap itself soon.
Anyway I went Leading Edge Computers near my place and the guy said he could do me a deal for 256 bucks to replace the hard drive. Blow that idea, too expensive. So the alternative is to send it back to the manurfacturer but I don't want to do that, even under warrently, because it will take at least a fortnight to get it repaired. I also want to downgrade from Windows Vista to Xp because I've had nothing but problems with it. Mostly compatibility issues as such.
So my question is what should I do in this situation? I don't know how long my hard drive will last, and that problem doesn't really seem to be affecting anything I use. The problem mainly comes about when I install updates. Can I buy a hard drive and install it myself? I'm going to void my warrenty anyway by putting Windows Xp on there anyway.
What do you think?Question about my laptop?
If you really encounter too much problem with Vista, downgrade to Xp is sensible.
Buying a hard disk is relative cheap nowadays %26amp; installing it can be pretty easy but make sure you have all the relevant disc for installation. Read your computer manual before you start the process.
Good luck!Question about my laptop?
Laptop HD's pop right out, easy peasy. I buy them all the time on ebay.
Yes u can if it's a famous brand of laptop. If not then ur screwed. If it's popular brand then u can find good hard drives or processors for it and search youtube.com or metacafe.com on how to put hard drives in and out of your laptop.
It probably will void the warranty to replace the hard drive yourself, but consider... will you EVER use the warranty if your not going to use it now? I'd just replace the hard drive myself, its not hard and it you need service work done later they probably won't even say anything unless its obvious you broke something in the install
Yes you can, although 5mb of sectors bad in a ???gb system isn't much. While your doing this you might want to upgrade the speed and size of the HDD. You will need a retail ver winXPpro with key(32 bit is more stable with wore software options). Since the retail ver only has the basic drivers you will have to chase down drivers for some of your systems hardware.
Sooner or later Microsoft will pull the plug on Xp. Vista is here and you will have to learn to deal with it. Honestly i find it much more stable than Xp was. Changing operating systems is the worst thing you can do to a PC. How on earth did you get bad sectors on a Vista PC anyways? Never mind i do not even want to know. You are too rough with the poor machine.

I had Windows XP Home Edition. I upgraded to Professional, and now it says not enough RAM to upgrade to Vista?
I bought a computer from Walmart in '06. A Compaq Presario in which runs okay, but is aggravating. Lightening got the main board in '07, so I took it to a shop where they took it in and replaced a part probably not even as big as my fingernail. It came back on, but they re-installed it with PROFESSIONAL'02 SP2. I have two hard disks on this computer because when it came from Walmart it had a recovery partition on it. But anyway, I just got a VISTA disc and now it says it needs more RAM. How can I get by this? I'm sure the shop I sent it to got by it, but they closed up earlier this year. I don't know how I can format one disk or whatever or format the whole thing, but I REALLY want VISTA on this computer.
Best Answer will be guaranteed.I had Windows XP Home Edition. I upgraded to Professional, and now it says not enough RAM to upgrade to Vista?
The shop didn't ';get by'; it. They didn't have to, since they did not install Vista. XP Professional has the same system requirements as the Home version does.
To run Vista, you need a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB recommended.I had Windows XP Home Edition. I upgraded to Professional, and now it says not enough RAM to upgrade to Vista?
Your computer simply doesn't have enough RAM. You will either need to buy more, or upgrade to a new computer.
Vista is very resource intensive from what I understand, and you may have other parts in your computer that will not be compatible either.
You didn't provide much detail so you will have to go online to look at the system specifications for your Compaq. It will tell you what kind of RAM you need. Then go to a Best Buy or Comp USA to get the RAM. RAM is very very easy to install. I don't know if you have a Desktop or Laptop. I wouldn't run Vista unless it has ATLEAST one GB of RAM but go for more if you can. If your computer is old it might not be able to push Vista well because most computers have caps on how much RAM you can use total. But 1-2GB is safe. The best thing is, if RAM doesnt work you can always return it . Its a win win situation. I do not have a windows machine now, but try right clicking on my computer, going down to properties and it should tell you how much RAM you have in there now. That will give you a baseline.
you have to buy more memory you want vista dont do it it is slow dont say i didnt warn you vista needs 2 gb of ram or it will barely run
Well, unless you ran a test to see if your computer is capable of running Windows Vista when you had Windows XP Home Edition, I don't see why it would make a difference if you had Windows XP Professional or Home Edition. If you don't have enough RAM you don't have enough RAM, no matter what Windows you're running.
Could you please add in how much RAM you have currently?
Anyway, you have a few options:
Upgrade the RAM on your laptop. It's a very simple process, and RAM is fairly cheap these days. Run a test on www.crucial.com it's a very good website and will tell you how much RAM you have currently, and how much RAM you have now.
You could try buying a lesser-version of Vista, although buying more RAM is probably cheaper.
Hope I helped, good luck!
NEVER BUY VISTA YOU WILL REGRET IT, REMEMBER WIN ME?
You know, there's probably an answer to your problem, probably a way to get past the memory check.
Honestly, though? If you think your computer is aggravating now, you should see it running an OS it's not supposed to with half the RAM you need.
I'd suggest it if you were a Buddhist monk hoping to learn patience. Otherwise, stick with XP Pro.

Updating my PC - need some help!?
Ok, i have a dell xps 700, and im putting in a EVGA nforce 780i SLI Socket 775 Motherboard, with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz Socket 775 CPU, and a Thermaltake V1 CPU Cooler for AMD and Intel CPU, plus OCZ SLI 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x2048MB) RAM, and finally a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 768MB PCIe Graphics card, with SLI. Im a newb to this, since this is my first update... Im leaving 250GB harddrive in my old pc plus others essentials...
Ive been doing some reading and ive read somewhere that i need to find the drivers on the net for all my new components and then transfer to a disk to load in when i come to install my hardware and boot up into the BIOS, if this is the case can anyone suggest a site where i can get them, just one will do since i will see how you've done it. Oh and another thing, i have a 750W power supply, however it came with my dell 2 years ago, do i need to replace it or will it be suffecient? Plus should i go for Vista or XP 64-bit? Thanks!!!Updating my PC - need some help!?
hi mate
before i start may i say you have some awesome components especially the geforce 8800gtx and the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700
however lets get started, the processor needs no drivers,as support for this is from the motherboard and operating system, and the memory is the same,no drivers are needed for memory
the only driver update needed is for your geforce 8800gtx and this can be found at http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.1 GeForce Release 175 is the latest nvidia forceware drive update and was released on the June 23, 2008
remember when downloading updates do not use a download manager and when installing the driver remember to disable any anti-viris you have running ,this can affect the smooth installation of your drivers, however enable them straight away after the driver is installed
other drivers could include audio drivers, however by the look of it you have onboard so this isnt required
your 750watt psu should be more than enough for any system and should be fine
personally i would stay with windows xp for the moment, windows vista still has problems even after the service pack 1 update, and windows xp is a much better gaming platform ,so go for the windows xp 64bit,,
good luck mate !Updating my PC - need some help!?
Okay first of all.... I suggest you to go for 32 bit Vista if you are just going to use the computer for home purposes not for extensive multitasking tasks
Also, if you are upgrading. You just have to install the drivers after you install the OS. Since you have a new motherboard, you may want to edit the BIOS to your liking however if you do not know what you are doing leave it.
you will more than liikely have to replace the psu since dell used to use prorietary connectors. Connecting that dell psu to your new board will fry the board. All of the drivers that you will need should come with the new components. You will have to re-install the OS anyway (because of the new mobo) so if you notice that the hdd shows in the OS as smaller than 250gb...update it all of the way (especially SP2) and you will be able to use the rest. If you don't want to use xp, then vista will be fine. XP 64 is a good os, but there are some driver issues with that.
1) I would do a clean install of your operating system. You want nothing to do with ME2 (otherwise known as Vista) nor 64 bit os. There is not a lot of application support for 64 bit - it presents itself as a host of new problems. Stick with 32 bit XP.
2) Your motherboard will have a driver CD with it - no need to search the web. Also, you will have the drivers for the new video card.
3) That 750W power supply is more than sufficient to do the job.
dont move to vista, stay on XP forever
OK, I don't get the question re: XP 64-bit vs Vista, are you reformatting the existing drive or trying to keep your old data/operating system etc intact?
You are essentially building a new computer, not performing an upgrade. When changing that many components (motherboard, cpu, video card, RAM) then you're better off installing a clean copy the OS from scratch.
However if you're trying to continue running your existing OS and installed software apps, then you'd replace motherboard %26amp; CPU, boot from your original operating system CD and perform a repair install. Swap in the new video card later as a separate step, after everything else works.
Drivers for your new motherboard are on the CD which came with it. If you don't have that, download them from EVGA's site (search for the exact model# of your mobo)
With so many changes, be aware that your copy of Windows will need to re-activate with Microsoft.
Your existing 750w power supply is fine, no need to upgrade that unless you're running 2 video cards in SLI mode.
p.s. If you're starting with a clean slate, wiping everything and installing a new copy of the OS, may as well go with Vista 64-bit. Microsoft has delayed pulling the plug on XP but it's days are numbered. If you're buying an 8800GTX then you'll want DirectX 10 support when it eventually matters, and that means Vista. While XP 64-bit is the most stable platform currently, you may as well be future-proof. A year ago sticking with XP would be the call- not any more.
For best results, completely wipe your hard drive and do a CLEAN install of 32-bit XP. I wouldn't mess around with 64-bit XP or any version of Vista, it's a recipe for pain at present.
The only things you're likely to need drivers for are the motherboard chipset and graphics card. Let XP install its default drivers for everything else, then download the latest NVidia graphics and chipset drivers from the NVidia website; install chipset drivers first, then graphics. Don't install the drivers from the CDs that come with your hardware, as they're likely to be outdated versions.
Need feedback on new PC purchase research?
Okay, still doing research and planning before buying my new computer to replace my super old one.
I still dont know if I should get XP or Vista.
How much speed and memory do I need (and how do i explain that to a salesperson/what to look for)
I use my computer to download movies and music, check email and surf. Dont play any fancy games.
I dont know if I should stick with new, or get something refurbished. Price is an issue.
I dont have the skills or knowledge to build or put together anything, it has to come ready to go.
I only need the tower part, no monitor or anything like that.
It has to have the following things (I think?)
cd reader/writer
floppy drive
Windows vista or xp
explorer,outlook, Microsoft works/office
Ethernet port
2+ phone ports
3+ USB ports
compatible with my current peripherals
80 GB memory
speed? P3 512meg
dual core or core 2 duo processor
3GB+ Ram
512MB graphics card
processor?
video card?
sound card?
modem? (i have an external sympatico one?)
Please, give me advice, is my info correct? I dont have a lot of money to spend on this, what is a reasonable price?Need feedback on new PC purchase research?
Mercuri is right. I am an XP fan because online it is all the same. I just picked up a Vista computer this morning at Fry's. Now I have two Vista and an old XP for internet use. (I just save them till something breaks then rebuild and ship to Fry's for an operating system.)Need feedback on new PC purchase research?
Get Vista. XP is old and antequated. Vista works much better with more features and is easier to use. Forget all the stuff you've heard about the fact that ';Vista sucks';... it's all irrelevant nowadays.
You're not going to find a floppy drive on anything new, unless you get something custom (and even then). Floppy drives are going the way of the dodo and you probably don't need one. If you do absolutely need one, they sell USB versions of the floppy drive for about $20.
No computer comes with the full version of Microsoft Office, so you're going to have to purchase that separately. If you get a custom computer, you can often have them install Office for you (for the same price as buying the software at the store).
Almost all computers come with a CD/DVD burner.
80GBs of memory is completely impossible as even the best motherboards only support 12GBs of memory. I think you mean storage or hard disk space. Typically the smallest hard drive you'd find in most computers is 160GBs, which is twice what you're asking for.
What's this ';speed? P3 512meg'; spec? That makes absolutely no sense to me.
Almost all new computers have dual-core processors.
Phone ports would be based entirely on your computer's internal modem. Some computers don't have a modem, so check the specs.oil pan replacement natural hair

How do Install an old SATA drive in Vista as data drive without formatting it first? I need my data.?
I had an old XP machine go down. I replaced the motherboard, memory, and CPU only to find out that the problem was actually the power supply. An expensive lesson, but now I've got a sweet new machine. I went ahead and replaced the hard drive as well because I wanted to install Vista on the new box and hard drives are so cheap it seemed the easiest route.
I plugged the old hard drive in and Vista insists on requesting that I format it if I want to access it. Can anyone assist me with accessing this data and setting this drive up so that I can use it for media, documents, etc without formatting?
Thanks!
BobHow do Install an old SATA drive in Vista as data drive without formatting it first? I need my data.?
Make sure it is set as a ';slave'; drive (usually a switch or pins on the back of the drive), so that it doesn't try to read it as a drive with an operating system that needs to be loaded.
You'll still be able to access the files. How do Install an old SATA drive in Vista as data drive without formatting it first? I need my data.?
Here's what I would suggest:
Order a 3.5'; portable hard drive enclosure (like this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/ ) and put your old drive in that. Now you'll be able to plug it into any machine with a USB port. The computer will look at it as one big flash drive (nifty, huh?)
If the drive was NOT formatted as NTFS when you first installed Windows XP on it, then Vista will without a doubt refuse to open it unless you format it, losing all data. Another solution is to hook it up as a slave drive in another computer running XP and dump the contents you want onto some sort of removable media.
Buy a new hard drive and install vista on it, set this drive as salve and keep it as back up you save your files this way and your computer will be running vista.
EEJ is right...as long as the drive is installed as a slave, which is a simple jumper relocation on back of drive, you should be able to access the drive. IF by any chance you still have a problem...consider getting a external HD enclosure (they're cheap) and then connect via USB...when all done you can still install the HD in the puter and format if necessary...this request for formating may be because of a format difference...fat32 versus ntfs ...
worth a try
good luck

Change windows vista start up sound?
I know with vista you can mute the start up sound but I want to replace it with my own .wav file. On XP I just found the windows start up sound in the media folder, removed it and replaced it with my .wav and named it windows start up sound and it worked fine. How do I do this with Vista? Or just tell me where that windows vista start up sound is located so I can replace it. Thanks.Change windows vista start up sound?

Command & Conquer Gold on DOS?
So I have a Mac, and I have DOSBox installed to run some older games. I downloaded EA's freeware release of Command %26amp; Conquer Gold, which apparently is not compatible with DOS like Red Alert is. I managed to download the DOS version from and abandonware site (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/378/Command+%2526+Conquer.html), which doesn't have any music or movies.
I copied the MOVIES.MIX file from the C%26amp;C Gold folder into the DOS version's folder, and that seems to work just fine. When it comes to the SCORES.MIX file, however (assuming that that's the file that contains all the music), DOSBox is unable to load it. (The DOS version contained a smaller scores.mix file that I replaced with the Gold version).
So my question(s) is this:
Am I looking for the music in the wrong file? If so, how do I import the music files from C%26amp;C Gold to C%26amp;C DOS? Or is there in fact any way to run C%26amp;C Gold on DOS after all? If not, then is there another site where I can download C%26amp;C DOS, complete with music and (preferably) movies?
And no, I'm not going to buy an XP/Vista Installation disc and Boot Camp it just to play one game.Command %26amp; Conquer Gold on DOS?

Try the patches available on that site. they have a modified scores.mix for download which should solve your problem.

How much is my laptop worth?
Here are the specs:
System Specs:
Model: Toshiba Satellite P105
Processor: Intel Centrino Duo
Ram: 2GB
HDD: 120GB
Video: Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family
OS: Windows XP (Vista Capable)
Ports:
2 PCMCIA slots
4 USB ports
1 IEEE 1394 4-pin firewire port
1 SD card slot
VGA and S-Video output
Built-In Wireless
Built-In Harman/Kardon speakers
TouchChip Fingerprint Reader
CD/DVD-RW Drive
I just recently purchased a new desktop, which more than replaces all the 'power' this laptop had. What I need is portability, which I can't get from a 17'; behemoth.
My question is, how much do you think I should ask for when selling this laptop. the only problems with it is some fading around the keyboard where my hands set.
Included in the sale would be an external TV tuner, which works with windows media center, as well as the original XP Media Center Edition Restore Discs. I personally run Windows 7, so it's up to date, even though I bought it Fall '06.

How do i get my Compressed zip back?
i have got windows vista home basic.
i installed then uninstalled winrar
after i did this i could not create a compressed zip folder by right clicking, then going to new and click compressed zipped folder.
also when i downloaded a zip file i could not extract it.
before when i got my computer brand new i could just extract and create compressed zip folders but when i installed and then uninstalled winrar
i could not do it.
i think that winrar replaced the software that windows uses to create and extract a compressed zip folder, but i am not sure about this
can anyone tell me how i can do it like i used to when i got my computer brand new?
Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?br>
i have tried system recovery but i installed and then uninstalled winrar about a month ago
i have also tried ccleaner registry but it still did not work.
i thiink associated all compressed files with winrar
so can anyone tell me how zip files can be recognised by my XP/VISTA OSHow do i get my Compressed zip back?
Here's a thread with answers to your question. I'd re-iterate here, but it's already on the site in the link.

Patch/installer information WoW?
I have a few question regarding patching.
I have just recently reformatted my HDD and was ';blessed'; with having to reinstall this game.
I have the entire install minus my original CD's downloaded(so I don't have to wait 8 hours to do a full patch, even though this overall has take waaay longer)
I know I can just download the entire thing at once but it auto/dl's and installs and I really want to keep it since I own 3 computers. Owning a complete pre downloaded working patch to at least 3.X.X would be ideal.
So does anyone know where I can get exact enUS patch information or even a list of patch and the order that they are supposed to be placed in?
for example I have a patch named ';WoW-2.3.0-enUS-patch'; now most my patches show like this:
';WoW-2.3.0.7561-to-2.4.0.8089-enUS-pat?br>
so i know if I am on version 2.3.0 (7561) I should apply this patch.
this ';WoW-2.3.0-enUS-patch'; doesn't help me at all. its 730kb i would assume its patch 2.0.0 - 2.3.0 Full enUS patch but without some assurance I really dont feel like applying this patch agian and have a failure to execute patch later because I missed 1 stupid patch.(this has happened like 6 times already)
http://www.world-of-warcraft-gold.com/world-of-warcraft-patches.html
sort of shows how the patches start at 1.x.x go to 2.x.x then back to 1.x..x and this is why so many people have issues when installing from original wow. (Most don't feel like using blizzards auto update downloading for 2 days)
So basically I am looking for is a detailed listed including the size of the patch the exact name of the patch and the exact sizes for every patch/installer so I can make a detailed list of how to install properly agian when I format vista and replace it with Xp.(coming soon)
so this is what i am looking for EI:
';WoW-1.12.0-enUS-patch.exe'; 465 MB (487,854,541 bytes) Date of patch - this patch is required to patch from 1.0.0 - 1.12.0 Pre bc.
or something like this for installers, because I'm not sure if these are demo's or originals or what: ( I purchased BC and WOTLK online so I'm regretting it right now, having to fight to get this game installed.)
WOTLK crusade installer(2.0.0-3.0.0)(2.04gig)
Installer.exe size 1.087kb
Installer 1 tomb.MPQ 1,564,320kb
Installer tomb.2.mpq
..ect.
I have 1 BC installer that's 3.15 total and 1 that's 2.04gig total but no idea which one is a demo/trail/original. I check the install notes and it doesn't help
I'm not sure can I install BC right at patch 1.0.0? or what? do i need to up it? if so to what?
Then when I get BC installed (2.0.0) then what can i install wotk? and what size is the original wotlk? or do i need to patch to get to wotlk? I have no idea.
Its get frustrating, mostly after these huge installs I get 50% through the WOTLK patch then some fatal error. after 10 hours of manual patching.sigh control panel delete wow, delete common files, flush dns, run reg cleaner, reboot and start all over again.
Any help would be appreciated, and no i cont feel like using the 14 hour download installer that blizzard has built in (unless I absolutely have to i guess but I would assume somebody has these notes tucked away somewhere..or something similar)Patch/installer information WoW?
well, it's getting kinda late, i'm not thinking straight, but damn, that sounds like a lot of crap you went through, WoW can be a ***** sometimes =o
well, I'm trying to avoid the massive 2.x.x to 3.blabla installer at the moment, and I'm having a perfect time doing so using the patches from this list:
http://browse.files.filefront.com/World+of+Warcraft+Official+Patches/;1323958;/browsefiles.html
it's a big list, but most of em are rather fast to download, and in the right order, and indicated wich language, and (i'm kinda confused by 2.3.0) they say for example:
WoW-2.3.0.7561-to-2.3.2.7741-enUS-patc?br>
Blizzard has released a patch updating World of Warcraft from v2.3.0 to v2.3.2.
so it's easy to see wich one you're downloading
hope this is of any help!

Laptop Suggestions Please.?
I would like to purchase a laptop for my mother. It will be her first. She will be playing Pogo games and learning to navigate the WWW. When I go for my monthly surgery, I will be borrowing it to check email and watch movies and play games. I do not need a cd burner as I have one on mine at home. I want enough memory so I can download a few other games for her. I searched for inexpensive models but most have Vista. I have never used Vista, and my desktop has XP so I think that might be better for her too. Can you remove Vista and replace it with Xp? Also, how do I make it wireless, what do I need to buy in addition to the computer. Mine is hooked up to cable and I have service through my local cable provider.
ANy suggestions on models to look at and to stay away from and memory size and anything else is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.Laptop Suggestions Please.?
You have the right idea. STAY away from Vista. It will be difficult, and require some skill to go from Vista to XP. It will also cost you about $200. I recommend, Compaq, Dell, HP, Sony(but it is pricey) but do not recommend ACER. Since Emachines desktops tend to burn out motherboards, I would stay away from them, too.

I recommend, Compaq, Dell, HP, Sony(but it is pricey) but do not recommend ACER. Since Emachines desktops tend to burn out motherboards, I would stay away from them, too.
How to set-up up client computers for SBS 2008?
Currently I have one server(SBS Server 2003 R2) and about 10 client computers on our company network (Domain). Our client computers are made up of Vista and XP machines. I am planning on replacing our SBS 2003 server with a SBS 2008 server. Actually our current machine will run SBS 2008, I will not perform a migration because we need a clean install. So my question is what is the easiest way for me to switch all of our client computers to the SBS 2008 server? From what I understand is every time you link a client machine to another domain a creates another profile which I would love not to have to create new profiles for each machine. How to set-up up client computers for SBS 2008?
You are correct that joining a computer to a new domain will create new user profiles on it when the users log in, and if you were to do exactly what you were proposing there is no way around it.. However there are other ways!! ... The pressing question is: Why do you need to create a new domain and blow away the old one? I can understand why you might need to completely blow-away a server, but do you really need to destroy the domain itself? If you migrate the domain to the new SBS server and NOT migrate everything else, you can still have a fresh server and have your current domain without having any client issues.
I have lots of information for you. Please email me though my Yahoo profile with you thoughts and for additional information.

Which is better for vista: Norton 2007 or Trend Micro or others?
I have a new laptop with win vista on it and it came pre-installed with a trial version of Norton 2007. However, I've heard so many bad things about it that I haven't installed it for fear of it slowing my pc down a lot or hogging the resources.
I also have a copy of Trend Micro that I bought with another laptop I returned. I kept the software to put on this one, but don't know much about it, pros and cons, etc, so I haven't put it on there yet.
I know from experience I don't like Norton or McAfee, and I've used Antivir XP for years with no issues, but I don't know if there's anything out there like that for Vista. I'm hesitant to go with something I don't know much about.
I guess I'm trying to decide if I do install the trial version of Norton, how difficult will it be to delete %26amp; replace it with something else when the trial expires?
Also, are there anything like Lavasoft's AdAware and Spybot: S%26amp;D out there that are compatable with Vista?
Cheers guys!Which is better for vista: Norton 2007 or Trend Micro or others?
all also best, as long as you have money to buy the software and you have update latest window operating system
antivirus program choose one, and antispyware program choose one, don't install ton of antivirus/antispyware or else your system will going slow
if you want free antivirus then go for either of the following

Avast Anti-virus works great with Vista and you're right Norton is a hog and worthless!
Trend-Micro
Review:
Works on Vista 64-bit. Any other companies doing that right now? Can't install the firewall without blue-screening Vista, but it is not necessary anyways. I have a very high-end computer, so system resources aren't a problem, but even so, it barely uses any. I have been with Trend for about 4 years now, with XP Pro, and now Vista 64-bit Ultimate (NO VIRUSES or MALWARE) I'm smart about the way I surf the web though... so that helps.
avast antivirus.. guaranteed for windows vista!

gosh why did they come out with vista! you cant do anything on it well i wanted to run monopoly tycoon but it wont if you kow how please tell me or... how do i uninstall vista and replace it with XP? is that possable? im on a acer 505-3371 and windows vista basic i need step by step please...CoMpUtEr HeLp PlEaSe!!?
well you know what i kind of know a trick...well you see me and my buddies brought laptops, and PC with Vista...waiting to find out it is ';****'; so what we did was call up Microsoft and demanded answers...(THE poor guy in India) so seriously we talked for like 3 hours or something and in the end he gave us Voucher for free copy for Windows XP home...
But the thing is it all depends Microsoft i think give certain of these out and only certain rep i think can give these out..
3 of brought laptops only one brought a Desktop...only me and the kid who brought the desktop was allowed to downgrade it...i mean got the voucher....the other 2 was able to use the GUYS in India to unleashed their emotional feeling on Vista...all in a days worth i think its worth bitching to Microsoft...who knows...?CoMpUtEr HeLp PlEaSe!!?
I feel your pain. Before anything else, back up all your data first. Insert your Windows XP install CD into the CDROM drive. It will ask if you choose to install a fresh copy. Choose that then delete old partition to erase all old contents. Create a new partition and the installation of Windows XP will continue for about 30-45 minutes. That's it!
Find your monopoly tycoon shortcut. Right click it, and click ';properties.'; Go to compatibility tab, and give it ';run this program in compatibility for'; and Windows XP (Service Pack 2.) Then give the program ';Run this program as an administrator.';
Click OK and Give it a try.

How can I make a certain partition boot beofre my main one?
A while back I installed Windows 7 and dual booted with Vista. But I got tired of Vista hogging up memory so I replaced it with XP Professional. But now I dont get an option of which OS to boot up. Is there a way to fix this so I can use Windows 7 again? How can I make a certain partition boot beofre my main one?
If you have 2 hard drives, go into BIOS settings and switch boot hard drives, because you may only have one with the neccessary boot loader installed.hair tips is this a good investment

If vista is so good- how come 90% of the people I know complain about it?
Since Vista has come out I have heard nothing but complaints about it. Many people have compared it to the ME program that was scraped and replaced with XP. I am looking to get a new computer soon and all you can do is buy it with Vista. I have used the Vista program at work for almost a year, and personally do not care for it at all. I do not find it user friendly.
I chat with many family members and friends who are stationed around the world. Many say that Vista is not chat friendly unless you keep downloading the patches to fix the problem. With so many complaints I am hesitiant about even buying this. I have had 3 different petitions cross my desk about how poor Vista is and asking to get rid of it over the past couple of weeks, and I have not signed them since I dont have this program at home.
Does Microsoft even care that even other companies are making commericial that slam the Vista program. What is so great about this program that makes it worth spending money on?If vista is so good- how come 90% of the people I know complain about it?
I remember hearing the same things when XP was released. People hated the new XP interface. It was buggy and unstable. Users didn't want to switch. Support was a nightmare.
The same thing happens every time there's a new OS. It takes time to work out the bugs, and people don't like change in general. The biggest difference is that so many more people are networked now that more are hearing the complaints and believing them. The same thing will happen when MS releases their next OS - people will be talking about how much it sucks and how superior Vista is.If vista is so good- how come 90% of the people I know complain about it?
Who said it is so good?
Ok it has a few more features...but to big and clunky...
It isn't, It's the worst pile since ME.. And it comes in different flavours too.
They spent so much money on it that they are hoping if they should loud enough and long enough people will start believing it. However the computer literate generation is starting to grow up andf they are running scared. So they are having to bully hardware manufacturers into not making things backward compatible to XP so they are trying to force us into Vista (Longhorn shoehorned into mediocrity).
I say deliberatly crash your pc and ask for XP back.
Ho the 90% of the people you know are they inmates in aslyums as why do't they just reformat re-install XP and stick a big one up to MS instead of whining..
becouse vista is beta version %26amp; it need much speed %26amp; space for operate system.it has not all features like Xp. i think Xp going very very well this time.
Because 90% of people are morons who stayed with Windows 98 even when XP came out, because they thought it was too slow or the interface was different, and so they make up lies like ';98 is more secure'; or ';you can't play games on XP.';

How do you format and install a nonbootable windows operating system?
I need a step to step guide to formating and installing a nonbootable windows 98 and windows xp or windows vista operating system .Do you really need a format disk to install these operating systems? and how do you replace your existing operating system with a new one . Where can you download this format disk ?How do you format and install a nonbootable windows operating system?
do a google search for win ** 'boot disc' or 'boot disk' that'll lead you where you need to go to find it.. and yes, if the install you disc you have is not a bootable copy, you do need a boot disc or format disc, and to replace an existing os, all you need to do is format the drive partition it's on... or if the os you're trying to install is newer than the one you have, all you need is the boot disc and the new os....and the new os disc will simply erase the old, format the partition, and begin installing itself for you.How do you format and install a nonbootable windows operating system?
if you have another windows, you can install the new windows as a ordinary software. I mean you should boot up your computer with old windows, put the Windows CD into the CD-Drive and click on the installation file. If you don't have another windows on your pc, you should use bootable floppy otherwise you can't install the windows from the non bootable CD.

How to make Vista as primary OS.?
I have installed XP( on :C) to my desktop PC, then i installed vista ( on :H) and my PC became a dual boot. Later on my C drive got some critical error(need to replace). So if i taken out the C drive, my vista will not boot as the boot manager is still refering to C. I'm planning to get rid the C drive and only use Vista. What should i do??
I have tried removing the C and then repaired the Vista with bootable disk but still it wont work. How to make Vista as primary OS.?
more reasons the drive letter system sucksHow to make Vista as primary OS.?
If you are getting rid of the one hard drive (you do have two physical drives, don't you?), remove it and when you reboot your computer it will recognize the other drive as C: Then you will have to reinstall Vista on the drive since it needs a Master Boot Record in order to boot.
What you can do is to uninstall XP, then it will be ok. You should uninstall it from the registry of your pc, or it will not function. I suggest you should install a certain optimization software. Most of this kind of soft wares can help uninstall some programs. Also they can clean up the junk files in the registry of your pc in time. You can search some on the Internet. You also can try this http://www.1Click-Optimize-Pc.com. I hope it can help you.

How can those fake anti-virus websites redirect my browser?
i'm talking about when out of nowhere, the web page you are on is replaced with one of those sites designed to look like an XP or Vista version of ';My Computer'; or something along those lines.
how does this happen?
i understand how it happens if you click a link or something, but how does it happen seemingly by itself?
example: today i was on a trusted forum website, typing something into a reply box and out of nowhere i am redirected to a phony website telling me that my computer is infested with thousands of viruses.
how does this happen? How can those fake anti-virus websites redirect my browser?
[This is my boiled down version of a conference with John Graham-Cumming; 221st episode of Security Now; http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-221.htm ]
The problem is the way in which browsers ';handle'; JavaScript language.
When a web page is loaded, that has multiple 'script assets', these can have several ';script tags'; and ';source attributes';, which says ';go get this piece of JavaScript from another source.';
It could be from DoubleClick, Google Analytics, or absolutely any server in the world.
These can also be assets hidden inside an ';iFrame'; (an unseen webpage behind what you can see).
The browser puts them all together, ';on the fly';, in the web page you're viewing. And they are treated as they all came from the same place, and so can talk to each other. They can call each others functions %26amp; variables. So they all have this equal access, running with administrator level privileges.
{{A bit like ';pooled resources';}}
If one of those JavaScripts can be compromised (any one of them), it can have access to everything else, to invoke whatever has been included in the ';bad'; JavaScript.
There's no way of protecting it or knowing that it's from the genuine author, or confirm it's not been altered.
And JavaScript is NOT protected from the other bits of code in the page itself. It gets to do whatever it wants.
That's why it's so critical to use Firefox with ';NoScript';, which will stop the script until you review %26amp; approve of it's involvement.
Another terrific security layer device is ';Better Privacy';, which blocks flash cookies...again, to stop active type of content.
Remember: allowing active scripting is ALWAYS a risk. How can those fake anti-virus websites redirect my browser?
It looks like your browser has been hijacked and directs you to a phishing site. Run an anti-malware or antispyware program like Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware to fix it.

How do i find out what wireless card is in my laptop?
i bought a refurbished dell xps m1330 laptop. it had vista installed, i replaced it with xp and manually installed all the drivers except the wireless one. i'm not sure what it is...how do i figure this out WITHOUT going to device manager (the driver isnt installed so that wont work)? How do i find out what wireless card is in my laptop?
Go to Dell's website and find your model by typing in your express service tag which should be on the bottom side of your laptop. Go through some hoops and get to the drivers section and go find your wireless driver.
You can pop open one of the covers on the bottom fo your machine and look for a chip suspended on two prongs which has one white and one black wire attached to it. It may say the Wireless brandname on it.
If not then try downloading a generic Broadcom driver for wireless and see if it works for you.How do i find out what wireless card is in my laptop?
If this is a DELL, then there should be a SERVICE TAG # on the back. Get that number and go to DELL website and download the driver. If there is no XP driver, then check the model for the wifi card and search the web for it.
Plug in a Cat 5 hard wire and go on the net to www.belarc.com and download the free belarc advisor program which when installed will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your operating system and all your hardware in seconds.
I put it on every computer I diagnose and tell the customer to leace it there for future diagnosis.
Get a program called Everest Ultimate edition. It basically tells you the name of every component in your pc and a whole lot more.

Here you go.
call to the internet provider they will tell
There were two built-in wireless cards that came with the M1330 laptop. Either the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG or the Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN. Since the laptop only came with Vista or Win 7, those are the only supported drivers on Dell's web site. If you go to Intel's web site, hopefully you can find the WinXP version.
If you can檛 find the right dell drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at:s

I need to uninstall windows vista..?
I got a few questions here .. Now I have Vista and I want to get back to XP. how to do it?? is it necessary that I should format all my partitions or can I only format the C Drive where it has vista and I want to replace it with XP ??
Thanks ..I need to uninstall windows vista..?
Get your XP disk and start to reinstall from SCRATCH. Yes, just delete that C drive partition and GO, leaving your existing partitions in tact. SAY that I am paranoid, but BACK UP STUFF FIRST.
If your computer CAME with XP, then that's what you should be using. If your computer CAME with an upgrade to Vista, then you might consider getting MORE RAM and using that. You see, Windows Vista IS the FUTURE. If you have 2GB of RAM, it will be working just great for you. You will learn the new things in no time.
Good luck and Happy Computing!I need to uninstall windows vista..?
ya you can only format c: driver and install Windows Xp where as you loose you data in c drive better back up it
Hi Put your xp disk in your CD ROM drive and boot from it. then delete the c:\ partition this will get rid of vista re partition format with ntfs and reinstall xp. hope this helps

Installing XP Pro on a partition?
I have three partitions (one with Vista, one blank, and one with XP Home Edition). I want to erase the partition with XP Home and replace it with XP Pro (which I just bought). How would I do this?
I want to keep the blank partitionInstalling XP Pro on a partition?
just start the installation it will ask you which partition you want to install on then select the xp home partition and complete the installationInstalling XP Pro on a partition?
I think it would be a better option to upgrade the
WindowsXP Home to the Pro because the vista may not allow the installation as the xp is a lower version.
To make a upgrade , just insert the cd and when it ask for the type of installation choose upgrade instead of fresh install.

How can I get the full download or DVD of Vista - I paid for the license?
My company laptop came form Lenovo with Vista Business Edition Installed. Te license key is on the bottom of the Laptop. The IT dept. has replaced this with a disk image of XP. I am allowed to put on Vista and support myself if I like, but I canot find a way to get the full version short of buying it new.How can I get the full download or DVD of Vista - I paid for the license?
If it is a company laptop, then you did not pay for the license or anything else. Your company probably used its Vista downgrade rights to exchange your company laptop's Vista OS for an XP OS, which means that the Vista key on the bottom of the laptop is no longer valid.

You can actually go right to Microsoft and they will get you a new copy as long as you have your license. You need to go through the Support group though.
I actually lost my license and copied the program from a friend and called them and they gave me a new license number.

Windows Dual Boot: Re-Installing XP without losing the dual boot menu?
Ok I have 2 partitions, one with XP 64bit and one with Vista 64bit.
I want to format the XP 64 and replace it with XP 32 bit but the last time I did this I lost the boot menu when I turn on my computer and it just takes me straight into XP without giving me the option to choose.
How can I install the XP 32 right now without losing this menu?Windows Dual Boot: Re-Installing XP without losing the dual boot menu?
after installing the windows xp 32-bit over the partition that had the 64 bit you will have to recover what is called the Master Boot Record for Vista in order to have the option to boot between the two, you do this by booting from the windows vista disc and just telling it to repair the system, simple as that, no strings attached.

Problem with my hard drive, please help?
Hi all, please give me some advise.Im not a big expert in dealing with computers so need some help.Let me explain what we have done so far.Our PC its HP with windows XP.We decided to change it to windows vista. We thought that with vista computer will work faster. We bought a new memory block as well, because vista needs more memory space. Our friend helped us to install a new hard drive.Im not sure what his plan was.I think he was going to use new hard drive as main and old one as additional one. After installing this new vista computer was not working any faster or better,so we decided to install vista xp back again.Every time I was restarting my computer the message was appearing on the screen-hard disc failure is imminent, back it up and have it replaced. We tried doing that but we can not, something is wrong with that old hard drive.Computer is not showing it at all, maybe it got damaged somehow. My question is how can we check if that hard drive is still working? And second question how can we in stall Windows xp back ?Do we have to copy it somehow to the new hard drive? Why this message about hard drive failer keeps coming up?Which of two drivers is about to fail?Sorry Im a bit confused.Advise would be appreciated.thank you.Problem with my hard drive, please help?
You should go to the website of your hard drive maker and download a diagnostic utility to check the health of your hard drive. It will be on the website under support. This must be run from bootable floppy, bootable usb, or bootable cd. Best option.
OR
http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2
Runs from boot floppy or cd and will test any hard drive.
OR
http://www.hdtune.com/
Runs in windows will test any hard drive.
If the new hard drive is really new it is not likely that it would be failing, and if it were failing you could have it replaced.
If the diagnostic program say there is a problem with the drive do not use it, except for files you do not care if you lose.Problem with my hard drive, please help?
Most new HP computer come with a recovery partition preinstalled on the hard drive. You can try to boot to the recovery partition. If you are not able to boot to the partition, then the hard drive has physical damage and cannot be repaired.
To perform a recovery from partition:
Disconnect all peripherals and internal non preinstalled devices from the PC, except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Turn on the computer.
When the initial blue HP screen appears, press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears. The progress indicator that first appears does not indicate that a recovery is taking place. The progress indicator represents the time before the recovery process is started.
When the Recovery screen appears, click Next, and then click Yes to perform a normal, non-destructive recovery.listview bug structuretoptr

Windows vista--does everyone hate it?
Had vista for 2 months now, it seems really crap and unreliable compared to xp. Startup/shutdown work properly about 50% of time, the lickle dog (windows search) is rubbish compared to xp. considering how much more faster and powerful my new pc is ,it doesn't seem as fast as it should be,is this because vista is a much bigger program than xp. Lots of basic things seem hidden from the user.
I'm seriously thinking of having this wiped and replaced with xp, but i don't wanna lose all the manufacturers (acer) little software tools etc.Windows vista--does everyone hate it?
Get Windows ';Mojave'; it's soooo much better than windows XP or Vista! LOL
Ok really though, XP is just plain stable. The computer I'm typing on right now has been on the same installation of XP for 4 years.... No system restore's and no reformat and lose everything. l just keep up on system maintenance and be careful what I install.
Vista is so resource hungry that all of your upgraded lickedy split new hardware is still slow. Mainly because Vista is using all the horspower before you even start the programs you want to use.
Microsoft recognizes their failure with Vista and is speeding the release of Windows 7 to try and get some more of our bucks. I hope they can get it right.... Oh wait they already did with XP... :PWindows vista--does everyone hate it?
I hate Vista!
My dad has it and he doesn't like it either
xp lot better
I've always used xp but on my new laptop it was vista i hated it so much i gave it to my sister and went back to using my old pc
Vista is a good OS, as long as you have capable components to deal with the 'Bells and Whistles' it has.
I love Vista! The little slideshow of your photos you can put at the side of the screen is sooooo cool!
I have vista and an acer laptop and I find that it works well, but sometimes I do have problems with internet explorer. So now I use firefox and everything is goooooooooood!
Yes and if they dont they should!!
My vista works fine and never had a problem with it.
But on otherhand I know what im doing.
You have to have a computer that isnt on the edge of being considered an antique.
Vista works best with 2 GB RAM. If you have 1 GB RAM, Vista will be slightly sluggish and if you have only 512 MB RAM, Vista will be deadly slow and often freeze. I have a dual boot configuration Vista/Windows 7 and both are working fine. The slow shutdown/start up in Vista has been resolved in Windows 7
If you hate Vista, fine.
Some people like it and have no problems with it, others hate it and have tons of problems. It all comes down to what hardware you're running it on.
I sometimes get annoyed when people bash Vista, it's an OK operating system if you got the hardware for it. But it annoys me even more when people say things like: ';Vista works fine for me so it must be your fault.';
We all have different hardware with different drivers that can cause different problems. Some of these problems may not even be Microsoft's fault.
Well, I'm sorry Vista didn't work out too well for you. If you're happier with XP, then stick with it. Maybe you'll like Windows 7 better
Edit:
@ Greensnow:
Yeah, it's true that it's pretty hard right now to find a computer that isn't powerful enough to run Vista decently. But having a powerful computer doesn't automatically mean that you won't have problems. When I said, ';It all comes down to what hardware you're running it on.'; I didn't just mean hardware that's powerful enough, but hardware that actually works well with Vista. As I said above, 3rd-party drivers can sometimes be buggy or conflict with other drivers. Since Microsoft doesn't make these drivers, they can't fix them. So just because you had no problems with Vista doesn't mean uk_pindar won't
';you can run vista without anti virus as the firewall is so good!';
What? That really has nothing to do with viruses. You can run any operating system without an antivirus if you really wanted to.
';Vista has taken over alot of the other operating systems such as 'lenux' and 'apple'.';
Um it's ';Linux'; and it's a hell of a lot better than Vista IMO
I love Vista
People who can't afford vista, hate vista in jealousy
Vista has so many features. Aero feature is awesome
There have been so many complaints about vista to MS that MS is shelving all updates to vista and going back to beta..go check out MS web site for News Flash..I caught it about two wks ago...but you know MS they could change their minds if they think they will lose profits.
people who hate vista are people who know 'abit' about computers, people think just because a pop up comes up saying do you wwant to do this? that it makes it bad, vista is so good that 'IF' you run it correctly and know 'ALOT' about computers you can run vista without anti virus as the firewall is so good!
windows realised that people were getting lots of viruses in the XP so they made it so that the majority of people (Which is business use) dont get loads of viruses and then complain about the bad service.
I can only see that people dont it because they think because one person has told them this that this is true! but most of the time that person hasn't even used VISTA! therefore word of mouth makes the view of vista poor.
Vista has taken over alot of the other operating systems such as 'lenux' and 'apple'.

Windows Vista is never really sold on bad spec computers e.g 512 RAM its normally on 1GB and 2GB therefore on these systems it works fine and at a good rate!!

yes i cant stand it. I want xp back but just bought a brand new acer 5735 at xmas, 3G Ram, 2MB L2 Cache but still internet explorer regularly shuts down or freezes, the acer came with 2 trojan horse viruses already in the game zone!! I got rid of macafee and bought the AVG Pro, I then did a bit of research and found that everyone with an acer should uninstall the entire gamezone as the viruses are in ';Big Kahuna Reef'; or some game of similar title. I'm close to bringing it back to the shop, I did fully insure it so I can but I'm also trying to figure out is it worth it to start all over AGAIN with another model....it's so annoying. Lots of things are hidden but I believe you can ';unhide'; them I think I already unchecked that option after having watched a video on youtube.I cant stand the microsoft office version that came with it either or is it Vista that's making me hate that? Roll on the end of the 60 day trial! Hope I can use some other version of office????????
i do actually like it, had it about 18months now and ive had to reinstall it 3times but thats due to my own fault + i like to do a clean re-install (Spring clean) everynow and again.
Never had any problems regarding compatability or drivers (home prem 32bit). All my programmes i need work fine with it.
I prefer it over XP anyday.
Im looking forward to windows 7 though, hopefully it will be the OP that Vista should have been
the main problem with Vista is its compatibility with older softwares/hardwares.
Its structure has changed compared to Win95 to WinXP, which is a major evolution for ';old'; users like us (who followed this evolution).
you should select the OS corresponding to the use you require when using computer. However, too few people really do that... They only concentrate on hardwares and rely on softwares.

Tough one here, XP install related - need true guru.?
I have a machine that will not allow me to install windows xp. As a background, i have multiple microsoft MCP certs, i have done thousands of OS installs using every microsoft product from windows 3.11 through vista premium 64bit.
I was using this as a second home PC, used mainly in the bedroom to watch DVDs and access the internet or play games if someone else is on our primary PC. XP home was installed and running fine until I upgraded the CPU from celeronD 2.66Ghz (single core) to P4 2.8Ghz HT (xp and vista see this as a dual-core cpu). I started getting random shut-downs. No warning, no BSOD, just reboots. I made sure BIOS was configured to enable HT. That didn't help.
Using monitoring software, CPU temps were at the lower end of the normal range as I have a great cooling setup in this case. I try to get this CPU above 54C (well within P4 operating temps) and can't no matter how many apps/games I try to run at one time.
I then figured it was the single core HAL needing to be changed to the dual core/hyperthreading HAL. No problem. Instead of simply trying to update or copy and replace the existing file, I decided to do a clean install. Using the same OS install CD-ROM, a retail upgrade version of XP Home, I run setup and format the C: Drive. Everything is going fine until I try to copy files. Certain files (approx 30 in all) won't copy no matter what I do. I thought maybe my disk had small scratches, but I took it to MMX and they cleaned it and it is better looking than many 'new' cd's or dvd's I have seen.
I try install again and the same 30 files won't copy correctly. Ok, maybe it's just a bad disk. Lets try a little trick. I allow it to install to 100% (obviously, less the files that wouldn't copy). Windows setup has to quit in the GUI portion because Shell32 didn't copy correctly. Well, maybe since setup is trying to run, we can repair the install.
I took out another XP install DVD (this time) and attempted to repair my current installation. Everything fine until it trys to copy certain files.
IT'S THE SAME FILES THAT WON'T COPY. I'm not guessing, I had made a list of the files that wouldn't copy off of the CD and it matched exactly with the files that wouldn't copy using the DVD.
This can't be a problem with a bad CD-Rom or DVD-Rom. I even tried switching out the DVD burner for a CD-RW drive instead. It's definately not a media or drive issue. I have run memtest with both 1 and 2 sticks present and get no errors. I have tried disabling HT'ing in the bios and still get the same results.
Any true PC Guru's out there that have successfully dealt with this problem. I have seen others post questions regarding problems with XP refusing to copy files, but the answers given were usually clean the disk, get a new OS cd-rom, check BIOS, check RAM, etc... the things that I have already done. I am in a somewhat unique position due to the fact that I have licensed copies of Win95, Win98, Win2k (all versions including server and advanced server), XP home, XP media center, Vista 32 HB (also gets disk copy errors when i try to install on this PC), Vista Business premium, and Vista Home Premium 64.
My MOBO shipped from the factory listing the CPU that I upgraded to as supported. I am at wit's end here.Tough one here, XP install related - need true guru.?
did you try this with an other H.D.D?
if i were you i would installed the HDD on a different PC
backed up the info on it
Formatted the whole HDD even MBR sectors
tare a part all the partitions and setting new ones
and tested it again
if it didn't work
i would install Ubuntu or open suse just to see if this problem is on Windows only if not i would install the old cpu and tested it again
it might not make sense but your problem is wired i guess the only way is trail and errorTough one here, XP install related - need true guru.?
Have you tried updating/flashing the bios.
This is leagues above my expertise, but I've had excellent help at support with knowledgeable answers to my specific questions over at bleepingcomputer.com. You do have to register, but they never send you anything.
Have you tried using a different HDD? I was going to suggest one of your RAM modules was bad, but that is not the issue. I also started to think maybe the OS install CD you were using had to be the problem, but I realize that isn't it either. So my only thought is the HDD.
I think this is a bad place to get a pro answer, tried that, doesn`t work, but any way, the problem seams to be the win cd bot the hardware, you could try to create a image of the cd and rewrite it on a new cd using the computer you r using now, you could use bad copy pro trial (http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/) to recover the data from the disk.
if is not your main computer you should consider instaling linux mint or ubuntu, is a very good os and is free.
