Take the hard drive out of your pc, take it to a friend and connect it as a slave. Format the drive on your friend's pc, put it back in yours and install windows xp.
hhhmmmm... seems like the os is trying to protect itself.......

here is what u should do..... format the drive without using the os disk.

use a second party. plug the hard drive to another pc, then boor using that pc's original os.

that will give u a chance to format the drive using disk manager.

start%26gt; control panel (classic view)%26gt; administrative tools%26gt; computer management.
You can format your drive with 98 bootable cd then you can install window xp.
download a linux OS that can be bootable from CD or flashdisk. Then burn it to a CD or save on a flashdisk.

then set up the boot sequence of your BIOS. it is when you turn on the pc then press Del or F2. find the boot settings in the BIOS menu. then change to CD or USB.

then using the linux os format the HD.

or you can use a floppy system disk with win 98 or any system boot. then set boot sequence of BIOS to floppy disk. then using the prompt command format c. this will format the drive c

then start installing XP.

if your XP is a bootable disk then just place it and set the boot sequence to CD then do the formatting.
Before you do this make sure there are XP drivers for your lappy. I wiped my laptop clean and then it took me 8 hours to find my drivers, literally. Some lappys I've worked on in the past had no drivers for XP. If you do find your drivers for XP, you need to go into the bios and make sure that your computer is set up to boot from the CD drive. When you start your puter tap F1, F2, and delete separately and continuously until you enter your bios. Then look for a boot sequence choice and make your CD first choice. See if that works. If you still have problems you might need to go back into your bios and turn off your Serial ATA for your hard drive and make it ATA. Hope this helps. If you have any questions email me. Good luck.
Partition your had drive ( use PartitionMagic by Norton), Copy all files off disk to empty partition, and then run setup. Should work fine. (Make sure you run as an admin)
