Windows XP Home software questions?

I have a friend who wants Vista completely gone and replaced with XP Home on his laptop. He does have XP Home full version (6 Discs) on the CD it specifically says HP Windows XP Home Edition that came with his destop. He has 2 licenses per end user agreement. Both desktop and laptop are HP's. Is it ok to install on his laptop? Someone told me it may not work because of serial number recogniction, is this true? Can I install it on his laptop? I dont want him to have to buy a new full version of XP Home if he doesnt have to. AND even looking for software its pricey, would an OEM version be ok for him to buy if he ever has to reformat in the future? How many computers can you install and OEM version on?

To install Windows XP, you MUST have a brand new serial number. That means, if his or yours already used, it cannot be used again. (I tried it and it failed.) However, if you happen to find a pirated serial, it will tell you your Windows is not genuine therefore it will not let you update from Microsoft.

microsoft is a sucker.... just call them up over the phone and they will give you the activation #, i have done this many times for activating vista. but make sure on the installation that you choose to activate over the phone.

So your ';friend'; wants to install XP. He has a copy of XP (on 6 discs?) and has a licence to it?



I'm guessing the Vista Computer is not an HP computer.



He shouldn't have a problem installed it on the new computer UNLESS the software checks to make sure. Some versions of Windows XP come from the Computer company, and are only allowed to be installed on the those typse of computers (An HP Copy of Windows be installed on HP computer).

but you probably should just try it anyways. The point with license is that this is only installed on One Machine at a time. so the license that he is going to use, isn't being used anywhere else.



he could buy OEM, this is for System builders, but you can only install this on ONE machine!
