Can I replace Windows XP with Vista?

I have a pretty old laptop, being built in '04. It was designed for XP but I want to know if I can format my HD and install vista, and if so how.

I am somewhat of a newbie in the learning process when it comes to computers, so any help would be appreciated =]Can I replace Windows XP with Vista?
go to microsft.com and they have a program you can download that will scan your configuration and tell you if vista can be installed on your computer.you can buy the upgrade and that would save your current files and settings or buy the full version and you would reformat the whole drive and wipe everything out.to reformat put the new vista cd in the drive and shut down the computer and restart.follw the prompts it is really simple.if it doesnt read the cd at first restart it go into setuo and change the boot sequence and make the cd drive the primary boot component.hope that helps.you can buy vista full version oem on newegg.com and ebay.com for 100 bucks
