How many gigs of hardrive space does XP need to run?

I have Vista on my new Toshiba laptop, but I'm trying to uninstall it and replace it with XP. I shrunk Vista and partitioned the hardrive, but it only gave me 6 gigs of space in the partioned area. Then, I booted from the XP cd, but it said there was an error. I'm thinking that XP doesn't have enough room. How many gigs of hardrive space does XP need to run?
