RE:replacing Vista OS with XP pro OS-how??

I have the max ram (2gigs) my laptop takes, plus an extra 4 gigs usb stick virtual ram, but i still find my internet to be slow----2 possibilities: i go online by putting my t-mobile SIM card in a Sony gc79 PCI slot on my laptop-----it is 'GPRS,' general packet data, which I am wondering if it is a 'slower,' less high-tech internet, and that's what's slowing me down (20 bucks a month thru t-mobile)---or (and) wondering if this Windows Vista that everyone's complaining about (Vista Home Basic) is as clumsy and oversized as I've heard--I've heard that laptops run better on Windows XP, because it uses much less hard drive space and is just a better os in general------so, if I want to replace Vista Basic that came preinstalled on this laptop with XP, how do I go about it?? And, if GPRS internet is a little slow, which cellular internet service would be faster???RE:replacing Vista OS with XP pro OS-how??
GPRS internet is slow.

You internet speed is dependent on the internet connection, and any internet access from a celluar phone based connection is slower than say, most DSL/cable modems.

Internet speed is not dependent on the operating system and hardware.

It is dependent on the ISP.

I do not find vista to be that oversized, after all it only takes up about 8 GB on my hard drive, and about 100 mb of ram.

What uses the system resources are the programs and data you have.

if you upgrade to a faster internet connect, you will have faster internet.

I guarantee it.RE:replacing Vista OS with XP pro OS-how??
well, you could obtain a copy of XP and boot from it, and carefull not to replace vista, because if u replace vista and didnt get XP working correctly, you will be in a bad position.

now a days computer manufacterues are dropping support for XP by not giving out XP drivers (eg: sony vaio) so people are forced to upgrade to Vista.

Well, I'd recomment downloading Windows 2008 Server RC1 free from microsoft, it is far fast than bloated vista and more efficient, while having all the features of vista and more :)
You don't mention the speed of your processor. That is important, Vista does take up more resources, but if you are running at lest 1.5 Ghz then that should not be a problem. It is most likely your T-mobile service.
Think of it this way, you've got a Chevy Cavalier and a Porsche next to one another on the road, the speed limit is 100 km/h. Obviously the Porsche could leave the Chevy far behind, but he can only go the speed limit.

Same applies to your computer, your internet speed is NOT going to be affected by Ram, or OS for the most part. If you're connecting through a cellular service for internet, that is your problem right there.

My suggestion is DONT use cellular as your internet, it's costly and the data transfer is pathetic. I'm not sure if they have something like this in the States, but in Canada we have Rogers Yahoo! High Speed Internet, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_Yaho for a little bit more info... Im sure theres something like that in the US (its wireless, but its NOT a cellular service)

Or, just get a Cable or DSL connection
Don't blame vista for your problem.Vista takes quite a bit of ram,but with 2 GB mine uses only 40% thats still way over 1gb to play with.If your service is slow it;s mostly your internet service provider. Try Altell thay claim to have faster speeds than DSL now,and you can use it anywhere in the USA.

But if you still want to go back to xp just but your xp cd in the drive and restart your computer and make a full recovery. If you don't have an external hard drive yet now is the time to buy one.So you can back up all your data before you format.

GOOD LUCK!
I disagree completely. don't dump the Vista. you speed problem is probably due to the T-mobile connection. It is much slower than most other broad band connections.

Things that will help:

1. run a really good malware and spyware killer. I like www.lavasoft.com Adaware SE because it is good and free.

2. get a really good system maintainence package that includes a registry repair/optimize function. I like Avonquest System Care or Fixit 8.

3. Go to www.microsoft.com/update and make sure you have ALL of the latest updates installed.
